Towing bar

Sometime in the next week or two, I need to tow the EV about 50 miles. I'm getting a hitch put on my van; I'd like to get a towbar attached to the Wagon and flat tow it with all four wheels on the ground.

Will I need a Wagon-specific tow bar? Will one for a plain Civic work?

And how about wiring up the tail lights? Is there a Civic solution?

Are particular reason for flat towing it? Why not just rent a dolly?

I think doitdub had a rig for towing his Wagon? Like an A-frame or something. Might want to check out his thread.

I agree. I have rented car dollys for $50-$60 a day. I just turn on the 4 way flashers in the car that is being towed. I have never had a problem.

jude's car is an RT4wd. I'm not entirely sure how his drivetrain is done, but I think his concern is towing with 2 up/2 down. I would think you could disengage the 4wd at the transmission still, no?

I'm pretty sure he's converted to FWD only (removed the driveshaft and the rear diff stuff). We made our own tow bar a bunch of years ago for my 1986 Civic hatch. Just welded up some plates with hinge pins (bolts) that attached to a trailer tongue with a hitch assembly. The plates bolted to the front of the unibody where the bumper mounted. We towed that puppy probably 4-5,000 miles on 2-3 trips to various SCCA National Tour autocrosses behind a 1986 Ford F150. It towed like it wasen't there.

Yeah it was on my previous wagon when I bought it. Check out this thread a little ways down for pics of it on. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6625

Unfortunately it's gone, and I don't have any part numbers or anything. I think there were 4 bolts that held it on, and when I was looking up the parts to reference for selling it, I believe it was wagon specific.
  • Yes, the 4WD is permanently disabled. Although a tow dolly is only $44/day here, I figure I'll be towing it to other rallies, so I'd like to own a solution.

No offense to doitdub, but that front tow package is UG-lee. I suppose I could attach it only when I was towing. Regardless, if it's Wagon-specific, it's going to cost me more than renting a tow dolly several times.

I eventually got it towed on a trailer. I'll post pictures as soon as I figure out how to get them out of the camera.

No offense taken. It was on it when I bought it, and was the first thing removed. The car was pulled behind an RV for years. Unless it was being towed fairly consistently, I'd say it's not worth the hassle like you're thinking.
