Help with the rt4wd, am only getting power to the rear wheel

i just bought my old rt4wd 6speed manual wagon back and i had to go pick it up and there's was snow everywhere anyway i couldn't take it home that day because it was stuck were its been sitting for about 5 months. while i was there trying to get it to come out my friends and i notices that only the back tire was spinning and no spinning out front, what could this mean? it had a y7 in it and the half shaft isn't bolted up to the block but the car hasn't been driven at all since the y7 swap. i thought that the half shaft might of came out and its causing the back wheels to spin but i took at look at it today from the top with no light or anything and it SEEMS that its still in the tranny but not 100% sure. also the day i went to get it out i heard like grinding noises when i put it in gear and take the clutch out as it was spinning tires but then after a couple wheel spins the noise stopped, am not sure but it seemed that at that point is when the front tires stop spinning but like i said am not sure if the fronts were ever spinning....could it be possible that the tranny is broken and still be able to have the rear tires spin?? or is it definitely an axle issue?...thanks guys i hope u guys can help me out
