This is looking pretty sweet, I'm just getting ready to put my z6 into my wagon and yeah I'm in the same boat you are. I think I'm just going to do the mpfi conversion though to make it simpler. A y8 in a wagon will be so much fun though!

hey thanks for all the advice guys, appreciate it! I am so glad I am finally taking the time to learn how to do everything myself.

I put the motor in today. Everything is done except reinstalling the vss (man my hands are way to fat to fit down there), shift linkage, and new axles.

I went to start the car and..... dead battery! so I'm gonna see if i can jump it tomorrow...
  • dead battery for that cam too uh?...

I'll upload some pics later 8)

Well I charged the battery up, and tried to turn it over...

It cranks a few times, then I hear a "pop" and I get smoke and a strong scent of burning gas.

The best way I can descripe the "pop" is an exaggerated version of the pop you get when you pull your spark plug wire out of the cylinder head.

    any ideas? thanks guys!

EDIT: the smoke and gas odor is coming from the throttle body, i have the intake off

Check timing, my buddies did thta when he tapped his valves. It was a sad day for his jetta.

sounds like spark plug wires are wrong on the cap. has happened to me several times and it sounds just like your description
  • Mandalore88Mandalore88 Senior Wagonist
Looks like I had two seperate problems (probably more I haven't found yet  )

Plugs on the distributor were in the wrong order

It looks like I did not tighten down the timing belt tensioner properly. It is still lined up to TDC so I didn't skip a tooth on the belt. I sure hope I didn't damage the head...

I will put it all back together tomorrow and hopefully it will start right up. The battery is still dead so I will have to wait for someone to come over so I can jump it.

All of us have made those mistakes, good thing you caught them. :P

So the car is cranking and it is still making the pop sound like a spark plug wire is being pulled out. The sound and noise comes from the "throttle body" on the DPFI intake manifold.

I have the plug wires in the correct order.

I am using the D15B2 alternator (OBD-0) with the Y8 plug wires. I think this might be my problem?

the distributor caps dont seem to be interchangable

the plug wires are different. D15 has the plugs across the firewall side of head and the Y8 has them on the radiator side.

I dunno if this is even my problem but any advice would be rad.

Well I had the distributor in backwards this whole time. Man I feel dumb. Car started right up and seems to be driving ok so far. It idles really low and dies sometimes but that might be from using the D15 manifold on the Y8 motor.

I have the cash to buy a P28 now so I just need to find one and then work on the wiring for MPFI

oh snap let me know if you still have it

SO does it have a little more power now?

man I didn't get a chance to work on it today. I think the timing must be off since I changed the timing belt. I gave it some gas to leave the driveway and it died lol.

    Post when you know! :D

Got it running today finally. I had two sensors on the intake manifold switched around. Works great so far, gonna try to pass emissions tomorrow...
  • leWolfleWolf Senior Wagonist
    Youre still OBD0?
  • Mandalore88Mandalore88 Senior Wagonist
yeah for now. I got a obd-0 to obd-1 jumper yesterday with a subharness with it for vtec, distributor, and injector wiring.

I just need a p28 now but funds are low.

I have chipped dx ecu I could use just to get it running but i dunno
  • leWolfleWolf Senior Wagonist
The OBD1 subharness, how hard is that to install? I thought is would be straight forward.

With this subharness premade it looks super easy, even I can do it!

If I took the time I am sure I could create one from scratch like most people do...

I will post how it goes I hope to get it done in one night when I find a P28.

i did the same swap into my crx, and that thermostat thing is a bitch to figure out, ill post the image u used to help wire that thing in, overall its hard to do but its do-able..

pm me if u need more help...

oh and check the you-tube in my sig for the car im talking about :)
  • I hope those rear struts work out for you good!!!
  • This is what it's all about, just dive in and we'll help you along the way. I want to do this swap too eventually.

This guy I know has a p28 with hondata s300 he wants to sell...probably for more than $250 because he payed about $500 for it. In case you were wanting something crazy.

Keep up the good work; there's nothing like learning fully immersed. It will make your beer taste that much better when its done.

thanks guys. i've been running obd0 dpfi setup for a good while now but havent put too many miles on it.

Runs smooth with no problems except o2 sensor because I soldered it to extend the wire when I should have built a extension harness.

I don't rev it high cuz I seriously doubt the dpfi setup makes enough fuel for the Y8.

I have everything for the MPFI swap but I don't want to do it out on the street, I'm still livin in this lame apartment.
