I bought an 87 RT (same as 86 but I think 86 is 50-50 4wd) for 1000$ canadian (about 1000 us) with some little fixes (came around 1400 too) and I'm satisfied but I think getting an 88+ would be worth it, depending of the price and if you find any (in Québec I didn't, my wagon wasn't in Québec for most of it's life). Parts are enough hard to find but unless you have some 4wd drivetrain problems (and on 88+ it's hard to find too) you should be fine. Don't expect any big power or buy an 88+ if you want to make a swap. It's carburetor too, so it's harder to get good mpg.
I like mine, but I would probably have prefered an 88+, so it's a question of what you find and a what price imo.
I use mine as a daily but I bought it for ice lapping, it's doing good, that's my only real concern.
  • Ive got an 86, I like it. It drives as well as my GF's 95 Civic and stil has the same comfort feel inside as the 88-91. The push button 4wd is plain sweet, but I dont know about using i for a launch. That is where turbo'ing out a RT4WD would prolly be better or something. I took my wagon messing around in the snow the otehr day, the 86 is a tank.
  • i guess it all depends on what kind of look your going for, for a dropped look, i would say hold out for the 88-91 model......it just has a more "refined" look for the drop
  • yea i held out a got a 91 already dropped
