snow plows side swipped my wagon! Updated.worth parting out?

Got the call while at work from my wife. The driver called the police and they came to my house. I have to pick up the report tonight after work. He broke off my driver side mirror, broke out both driver side windows and scrapped up both doors. Thats what my wife told me over the phone (haven't seen damage myself). I hope the city plans on paying for the damage. The drivers supervisor came to our house to appologize and cover my windows up with plastic. Anybody know how much doors are going to cost and how easy they are to find used?

    dam that sucks......
  • Well, if that happened here, they would undoubtedly write the car off... and there wouldn't be much money to be had for it either :(

    I'm sorry for your loss
  • not entirely...
    there is a stronger case
    if one can back up
    activities (pics)
    converted into
    time, effort and
    such...
    thats a lot more
    than 'a' wagon...

    dunno man...
  • I'm 99.9% sure it's totaled :( The A pillar is toast and both doors are pulled about 2 inches from the body. Got my police report and have spoken to the service dept. I have to file a claim and hope they pay it. We shall see.
  • Glad to at least hear they stopped, but sucks to hear that another wagon might bite the dust because of some jack ass who can't drive. I thought about parking my cars out on the street to keep these butthole plow drivers from plowing the snow onto my sidewalk (here in Germany it is law that you clean the sidewalks) but then figured they would just tear up my cars.
  • wow, man, that really sucks... I hope it works out for ya

If I were you I'd get a full assessment from a GOOD body restoration place that does classics, get them to take all the measurements also, and all the details, frame included of course... and threaten to go to the newspaper. Once you have some details let us all know and hopefully it's salvageable
  • our wagons are classics at least imho. if you could pay em dearly for your loss. i hope it will work out for you.

    wagon.......................4ever...............................
  • Talked to some people today. They accepted responsibility and said they'd "take care of everything". I'm waiting for a call from their insurance guy about getting some estiments.

I'll be interested to find out if the car can be saved.

looks like a write-off to me. a quality body shop will charge 2x-5x the 'replacement value' of the car to do a good job. look at the damage. that front windshield has gotta come out to do repairs on the pillar, replace doors and probably some seals, respray that entire side and hood to blend in. parts alone are going to probably run $1000+god only knows how much in labor! start shopping for a new wagon now.

if for whatever reason they do decide to repair it, make sure you get to choose the shop.

also start researching cross country finding same year/model/milage wagons. print out the top 10 highest pricest ones and bring them, along with ALL receipts for anything you've ever done to the car. insurance is to cover 'replacement value' they should pay out within the top 5 of the going average list price + any repairs/bills you have (usually only if done within the last year). tires tell them a lot as well, if you have above 75% tread, they should also add value to the car, if it had a full tank of gas, that's added value. i may sound a bit extreme, but that's how you get a fair value. i totally a 90 crx si (b16), they offered me $4500. I slammed $5k worth of bills on the table and walked outta there with $9.5k. Don't let them screw with you on their 'Book Value' bullshit. you want fair or above market value and will settle for nothing less. this isn't a dodge neon we're talking about here.

i've written off 3 cars and had a hand in writing off another 4 (passenger seat... or other endeavor of sorts), i know how these buggers operate. Out of the 3 cars i totaled, i drove them all for at least a year and was always paid out more than i paid for it when i bought it even after a year.

Great advice. I've already started collecting my receipts and printing out "like" wagons for sale off craigslist and such. I agree with you in terms of the repair. It's gotta be a write off, thats why I'm working on being able to show the true value of the car. I'm sure they'll try to convince me it's worth $0.00 but thats BS. It goes to the body shop tomorrow so it'll be interesting to see what they say. I'll keep you guys posted. If it is totaled I plan on getting the car back and parting it out and picking up another wagon of course.

if you have space to store a 'parts' wagon, do it! i have...*counting*... 6 EF's and they have been worth their weight in gold, if anything just the knowledge gained from dismantling. it's amazing what you learn when you don't need to give a shit if you break things.

do not hint towards you wanting the car back, wait until a fair deal is on the table until inquiring about it. you don't want them to think you have a sentimental attachment to your car. you wan them to think you are a cheap bastard that wants the most out of a pile of crap. sentimental value is easier to crack than the general personality of someone that's a cheap bastard.

what is your year/mileage? est. what have you got in bills? mileage is everything, i'm eager to hear what you are at. i'm already emotionally involved.

i just saw that you are from Ohio (correct?)... in which case you should ask for more. Wagons in the mid-west (right?) are rare, that sucks. sorry man. enjoy the rust/bible belt. (coincidence?)
  • It's an 89' with about 155k miles. From Cincinnati, Ohio. Yeah it's in the midwest but I wouldn't consider Cincinnati part of the bible belt but outsiders might. It is tuff to find a wagon around hear, atleast a clean one. I drove to michigan and back for this one (13 hrs round trip). I've told the bodyshop I want the car back but not the insurance guy. My car does have rust but not sure if that will factor into their value they want to put on the car. I don't even know if the guy from insurance will ever see the car other than the pics the city took. Might just go off estiments from the BS. Shity part was I was planning to fix the rust and really start to work on the car when spring hit. I do have space to store this car. I have a 2+ garage and my dad has a shp thats 5k sq ft.
  • I didn't see that pillar damage but if the door seals and you can live with it, and take them for all they have might be too bad. Smooth it out as best you can and walk away with cash in your pocket and maybe a little more beat up wagon. A wagon is a wagon no matter what the condition.

Good luck and quarters is giving great advice. Screw the insurance company anyway you can because they will have no problems doing the same to you.

155k miles is way below the allowed annual average.

being realistic, i would say that you should expect to get $2k-2.5k + bills you have. that should cover you getting another one almost anywhere in the country. had you said you had 240k+miles, i would say 1.5k - 2k.

    good luck.

Those are the number I was thinking as well. Still waiting on their adjuster to call me and come out. I'm getting pissed it's taken this long. Picked up my rental car on friday.

Ouch! Those plows can really tear into a car. I was expecting to see the damage lower down on the wagon.
Good luck on getting it fixed or a good value for it.
  • I've heard from the insurance. I'm looking to get between $2500 and $3000 from them. My question is it worth it to part out or let them take it. I'd have to pay 10% of the cars woth to buy it, so around $250 - $300. Beyond selling the B18a as a drop out what parts are in demand on these cars?
    Thanks
  • Definitely buy it back. When youvget a new wagon, uou'll have a parts car. Or you can part it out to those needing parts here in the HCW..
  • Buy it back and part it out. there are a lot of parts that will sell fast. You will get WAY more than $300 out of it. I would like to buy the passenger seat if its still good.
  • I went ahead and made a post in the parts section for the part out. Wanted to get a list of parts going that people would want and be interested in.
Thanks for all the comments guys.

I found a 92 four door I think I'm going to pick up till I find another wagon worth buying.
