Thanks for the response, Now I have any idea how much the wagon can pull and what it's limitation is.

I usually have at least 2 adults in the car, for my big trip I had 2 adults, all my camping gear for a week and the 2 quads. The wagon struggles at speeds over 70-75 with both quads on there, but other than that it does awesome.

I noticed elevation has a big part it in. When I was driving on the coast I noticed the car did a lot better towing up and down hills as apposed to in Idaho a couple thousand feet higher. But as long as you aren't in a huge hurry to get anywhere, you can easily tow around 1000-1200lbs without a problem and still stay over 25mpg. I've been really impressed at how well the wagon has been doing towing.

i'm very impressed with your tow hitch built.

I'm eagled to built one. I was wondering if you can give me the measurement of all the tubes and plates that you had cutted adn welded?

I really don't have any - I built it as I went and measured as I went. Here is the order in which I build it.

If anybody has questions about this, PM and I'll give you my phone number so you can contact me. I'm looking at possibly building a few more of these - they won't be a direct bolt on, you'll have to take them to a shop or buddy to weld up the main plate, other than that they'd be complete.

I'm possibly game for one ....
I do have a little something bumper mod n the worx but this might just work with it ..
    Have u set s price .. ?
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
I don't have a set price. Haven't even got that far yet. It'd probably be at least $150.
  • What if you drilled some holes to bolt up a piece of steel for the support to go in the cabin under the spare tire.
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
That might work as well. I think welding the plate has a little better distribution of the weight and stress, but if you bolted it right it might work pretty decent. You still have to cut part of the sub floor out anyway, so why not weld the plate in there.
  • Ahhh... I see... sorry missed that...

It's all good. Just passing along the knowledge. :)

I'll be doing this in the future, glad I saw this thread. This looks much better than the aftermarket ones for sale. Plus I love how low-profile it looks installed.

If you have any questions hit me up. I'll help you out any way I can.
  • what can you tow that low?? lol. you shud tow a Redwagon
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
I used a u-haul tow dolly the other day - worked just fine.
  • This is great stuff, I'll have to work one up after I lift my wagon. My wagon is gonna be the track slut parts car drag tool whore, little trailer would be awesome.
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
I've loved being able to haul lots of stuff on my trailer. Makes me not "wish" I had a small pickup anymore. lol I can almost haul more with the trailer than I could in the bed of a small pickup.
  • how does it level when your pulling a trailer? i suggest maybe install a transmission cooler to?
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
I usually try to balance my trailer so there isn't much weight on the tongue. And the only time it really feels like there is a load on the motor/trans is when you're accelerating. I don't know if the car can pull enough to merit a transmission cooler. I've thought about it though, I'd probably put a temp gauge on it first and see if it's even getting hot enough. I pulled 2 quads to the coast and back (~1200 miles) and didn't notice anything weird with the motor or tranny.

Well, I think I just hauled my biggest load with the trailer. Ended up having a complete del sol chassis on it. 1130 lbs on the trailer. Pulled it just fine. Total car weight on the scale was 4600lbs. With the trailer unloaded it was 3400lbs. Here is a pic:

I'm still so angry to see a straight body del sol go to waste like that but at least we got it out of the shop, finally HAHA!
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
Yep, more room for better projects. Woot!!
  • was that the delsol you where parting out? and awsome job with the tow hitch!
  • JDMWago666JDMWago666 Senior Wagonist
Yup, that was the del sol that was being parted out. Poor thing had a great body but nobody wanted it and we needed it out of the shop. We chopped it up and he scrapped it today. Still have parts from it for sale though.
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
Yeah, lots of parts. He he - I'll probably be listing them soon.
