Boot leak

I've got a bad water leak in the boot area.
I've had he mrs sitting in the boot while I run water over it with a hose but see no leaks. We spent a good 30mins doing this and nothing came in.

As soon as it rains my boot starts filling with water. It's dripping down the sides of the boot behind the rear wheels, and above the rear lights on the chassis.

I've looked around the open boot area and I cannot see anything which looks like a hole.
We did wonder if it was coming in from the tops of the rear quarter windows.

I'm stumped. Any suggestions guys?

If it were a Civic or CRX I'd have sorted it long ago. I've done the rear cluster foam already too. Which is what makes it more annoying as they are not filled up again ! Yeah, the water drips down and somehow gets into them :x

Rear taillight seals is the common culprit. Pull the tail lights and check the seal.
  • Been done.
Removed lights. Power washed the inside and outside. Remoed all the gkunk built up around the sides in the gaps.
Washed the foam seals as per that thread above. Sealed both sides when refitting tothe shuttle.

It's a method which has always worked for me on EF's.

It's dripping from above the lights, so has to be coming in elsewhere.
The one which confuses me is the one above the rear lights. Where the hell can it actually come from? Both sides !!

Around the rear quarter windows would be my next guess. Those little vents have always made me curious.
  • i don't know if wagons are prone to this, but on CRXes the roof seams' sealant tends to dry out and crack over time, letting water into the hatch area. Right at the back of the roof where it meets the hatch.

Is it leaking down 1 side or both?
Look at the trim on the front edge of the rear 1/4 window. The one w/all the vent holes.Behind this trim on the lower 1/3 is what looks like a vent tube.Try shooting water here.Maybe the tube is ripped, clogged &/or leaks.
  • check the all the wires especially third breaklight etc...

    a picture can show...
    state and condition...
    thats way easier for
    others to determine...
    yeezzzz

    ahaaha...
    LOL
  • ps...
the condition driving in the rain...
    equals powerwash...
    full blast...

    trust me...

  • SiWagon. I had one of those vents off and didn't see much behind it ?
I'll look again. They aint hard to remove.

The trim around those 1/4's I've priced up so I can see removing them wont be too bad.

Certainly on the passenger side there is overspary from some sort of repair near the window.
I had a CRX one time which had it's boot glass smashed andthe new window fitter didn't seal all the way around it !!

I'll take the vents off again and check.
I couldn't see drain holes, but in the boot I can see where they might route if you had a sunroof fitted.
It's coming through on both sides.

I had the dehumidifer in there over the weekend as I was off to a meet.
When I peeled off the drive it was dripping in from the bolts in the boot hinges.
    So I'll check those seals.

I see that the rubber hose for the boot wiring has a couple of tears and the cable tie which has a rubber washer on it, well that's old enough to need replacing.

All roof and rear interior is out so I can trace it. I'm going to have to treat some rust spots on the roof bracing as well now.
  • I've found the problem. I guess this isn't just me that is going to have this issue. Surprised I've not seen it on other EF's. But then both my shuttles I've had had replacement boot hinges.

    Driver side
The hinge was replaced at some point. I've always been aware of the lack of decent sealing around it but didn't notice the big crack till now !!
The water is definately coming through here. As you can see from the condition of the inner metal work where it drips from:

The rubber cover for the boot wiring is worn too and when closed this will sit in the pool which forms at the top of the boot opening. It seems to be leaking into that and then running down to a point above the rear lights.

Passenger side. Same problem and the hinge hasn't been removed.

Both the lights have been sealed against the body with the original foam gaskets doubled up with silicone.
I've given them a good blast but think water might be seeping in through the joint beween the translucent coloured lens and the backing. Simple solution is to drill drain holes in he botom of them..

Looks like I need to remove the boot and hinges then remove all the old sealant and try and get some rust proofing to flow through into the sections I cannot see or it's going to rust from the inside out. Bugger. :(

im going to check this out tomorrow on mine

thanks for the pics and info Dave

i did think water could get in on the rear side windows, where the two trims meet. i sealed mine up ;)
  • This is awesome and probably something other should be looking for.

I have the same leaking going on in the back of my wagon.

Thought it was the taillight gaskets which I changed, but the water kept on coming in and filling the back 2 compartments under the little removable plastic storage compartments.

One of my hood hinges was broken which I changed but didn't realize the importance of the sealant under and around those hinges.

I even drilled and painted drainage holes into the areas where water pooled to allow the inevitable water to exit until I figured this thing out.

Well, now I have something to look forward to in the spring...

Now to find a suitable gasket material to put under those hinges...

    Thanks!!!!

  • That's exactly the problem I had.

I've removed all the trim around the rear 1/4 windows and there are no leaks there. I have remvoed the plastic vents and will be fitting new stickybacked foam to them or silicone.

I'm going to use panel bonding for the hinges just like stock. Will see if there is a way to weld in some bracing as they are obviously flexing in that area !!
