Transmission ?

I think this is the right place to post this. If not sorry.
Spoke to a guy with a DX wagon for sale. 5 speed. Sounds good but guy said previous owner put in a "speed shifter", and now does not shift into 5th gear. Its like its a 4 speed now. In talking to the guy he said his mechanic checked it out and its nothing that would hurt the transmission. No idea if it was a honda mechanic or what. For it to only shift though 4 gears the mod would have to be internal right? I thought that maybe the linkage could be screwed up but that would effect shifting with all gears. Any ideas?

    Sounds more like a transmission problem.

    1) If the shifter will engage reverse, it's rotating far enough for fifth- same gate.

    2) If it shifts into 1st and 3rd with no problems, it's pulling far enough for 5th.

    The guy claims it shifts 1-4 no problem and even without 5th gear he gets 30 plus mpg. I'll have to check reverse when i go look. Thanks for the help.

    Are you sure its a 5 speed tranny? The Civic base model came with a 4 speed tranny. I hope they didn't swap one of those in there. :shock:

    Sounds to me like they put a 4 speed tranny in.

    Do any of you guys remember how to tell the difference in 4 and 5 speeds by looking at them?

    Just put it in 5 gear and see if there is a 5gear.

    I think you are right. I had this happen to me before. Also the 4speed transmission has some super long gears which makes for poor acceleration but would account for the 30mpg he is still getting.

    I have not had a chance to look at the wagon yet, but I am thinking it probably has a four speed trans in it and this guy just does not know. Hopefully I will be able to look at it in the next few days. Thanks for the input guys.

    Or he installed some goofy shifter that's the wrong application, too long down below and hitting the exhaust, not allowing to go into 5th? Just another idea if it's not a STD trans...
