Wagon 2wd to 4wd conversion

Are the chassis of 2wd and 4wd wagons the same? I'm thinking of getting 4wd that has been in an accident and doing the conversion. Will it all bolt up? or will I still have to fabricate? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

  • They're different, but at the same time they're the same. There's some bolt holes missing, but the overall structure is the same with the exception of the following:

    Fabrication:

Mounting the rear diff; 2 bolt holes that hold the front diff mount are not there and swap 4WD rear crossmember into 2WD chassis for rear diff mount.

Mounting center driveshaft support; there's no mounting points on the 2WD chassis for the viscous coupler/center diff support.

Shifter; the 2WD shifter is very different from the 4WD shifter. You need to seal up the hole in the 2WD chassis where the shifter goes through and mount the 4WD shifter inside the car, then open up the firewall for a spot for the 4WD shifter cables to pass through into the engine compartment.

Motor/transmission mount; the transmission mount on the passenger side frame rail is different. The pice that is spot welded to the frame rail it slightly taller (about 1") on the 4WD manual transmission car than any of the other Wagon configurations. There's a few different ways to address it. I chose to remove the 2WD one by drilling out the spot welds and then welded in the correct one from the 4WD manual transmission car.

Other than that, it's just a matter of bolting in the rest of the 4WD stuff.
