Man do I hate doing them on these cars.

Just a heads up of what is expected:
Removal of axles, rear tranny mounts, shift linkage, lower motor, pull tranny out, replace clutch. Reinstall in reverse order.

Sounds easy right? I've done 2 before while motor is still in the car, just about killed someone as a stress reliever. If they have a tranny jack that will definitely help a lot. I just use a floor jack and muscle.

I find doing the clutch change on an RT4WD easier than the FWD version. Its four extra bolts but the RT4WD shift linkage is far easier to remove than the bitch pin on FWD.

Give us more information about the car. There's plenty of members in the Northwest, someone should pipe up.
  • I have done a few of these and I find it easier to remove the motor and tranny as one unit. Then set it on the floor and separate the tranny from the motor. This also gives you a chance to clean everything up on the motor and engine bay.

I came to a similar conclusion

If someone has to ask how to change a clutch, do you think they're capable of doing this?

    No.

Buy a Chilton and adequate tools. It's not hard. Work smarter not harder.
  • this guy also has a set of RT4WD wheels he can throw in if someone helps him, he cant be out of a car for more then a day or two, thats why he is asking for help...

this is the guy that bought the blue rt4wd off the vehicle section on here ( the one you were going to buy charb )...
  • Hey Charb- Why don't you help him? :P

I agree- easiest way to replace the clutch on it would be to take out the motor and do it that way. It's kind of a pain, but it can be done. :)

Just make sure you give yourself a good solid time block to do it. It won't be a fast fix.

    Hell. Fucking. No.

It is far easier to change the clutch while the engine is still in the car. There are access panels in the fender wells for a reason.

Pull the engine switch out timing components and oil pan gasket for new ones. Nothing to worry about for a bit (as long as motor is good).

It don't matter which way u do it it's going
to be a pain. So take ur time and make sure
u do it the right way. That way u save some time
    and head ach. Good luck.
  • Pulling the motor and tranny is not as hard as you might think. The wire harness stays on the motor. Just pull the main plugs on each shock tower. There are a few single wires, but not many. Disconnect exhaust and shifter linkage. Take both axles out(You have to do this no matter what method you choose) and unbolt the motor. I use pull the motor up out of the engine bay. and then push the car back out of the way. Check one of the online manuals before you start so you can see what you are getting into.

Got to start learning sometime, might as well be now.

Takes literaly half the time with the engine still in. Just slide under the car with the gearbox on your chest.

I'm not going to tell you to keep yourself safe because that's just common bloody sense. :)
