homemade arm rest udpate

Well I figured I worked 4 hours to make this thing I would post some pics. I missed having a center console so bad I had to make one. I decided to add a little of the wagon into the design of the thing. Plus I know the wagon sits higher so anything from a hatchback would sit to low so I made this one higher. Again nothing fancy but I thought I would share. Let me know what you guys think (hopefully nothing bad)!!! Will probably work on the design a little bit and make another one we will see.

Are you serious? I guess I could make another one if you want one. What is four hours of work worth to you? It is a little awkward to pull the e-brake but small price to pay for the comfort of the armrest. I was going to make it padded on top but I wanted RT 4WD in the design.
  • good job. 8)

    If, I had a 88-91, not an 87...
If, I hadn't replace my seats with 01 Civic seats that already have a flipdown armrest built in...
...I would certainly want one. Its good work.

For the wooden top, I assumed you were going sand/smooth the bejezus out of it, lacquer it up with a charcoal and put some low gloss clear on it. That would look great.

Thanks for the compliments. I was thinking about doing something else with the top but am still thinking about making another one this was just born out of boredom. My girlfriend really likes it because I measured it to her arm. I want to raise the "RT" higher because once installed you can't really see it. On the next one I also want to put a mount for an LCD. RIght now the lcd I have for the back seat sits right behind the ash tray, so it is kind of low. I would also use a sold piece of wood too. The only thing I had on hand when I made this was plywood. Well again thanks for the compliments.

It looks great, you did a good job but man would it piss me off something chronic to have that there.

Yeah I finally drove the car today with it in. For city driving which requires constant shifting it tends to get in the way a little. It is confortable once you get up to speed. If I shorten it up a couple of more inches it should be just right. I am thinking about hinging it so when I need I can just fold it down. This will probably be more practical for the city driving. I will have a couple of weeks off in August where I will most def make a new one. Anybody have any design ideas let me know maybe somebody else will see something I am not. THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENTS!!!
  • what kind of material did you use for the upright/legs that are covered with the black carpet? is that plywood, too?

    it is extremely shiny!

    ...jm.
  • that looks great man. that gives me a great idea for my 90 with the stupid auto seatbelts. is it cool to steal you idea? love the 4wd and the sides. keep up the great work.

Go for it man. It isn't like I am going to fly all the way from Germany to stop you  Thanks for asking first though but yeah it is cool man. I need to make it a little shorter as it is slightly in the way.

I am going to make speaker pods next. The idea is to make a pod that you can fit where the speaker covers sit in the front doors. I want to make it paintable so you can match it with the car if you so wish. Hopefully my brother and I can make these pretty nice and almost finished. Paint, fit, and install your new 6 inch speakers. I don't know if anybody has done this yet but I haven't seen any yet and I thought this might be a nice idea to show off those speakers instead of having them hidden in the door.
  • Well I was messing with some plastic and decided I would try and make a cover for my arm rest. It beat sanding it down, smoothing it out, blah blah blah. So I made a plastic cover and painted it to match the car. Well it might suck but I am working on my plastic skills.

  • Lookin' good!!

Would you mind posting the dimensions on the forum so we can copy?

They do say that copying is a form of flattery...

    Cheers !!
  • Well I would if I had time, but it is 11:30pm and the wife takes the car back to our other place tomorrow. Unfortunately currently we reside in different places due to her job and my military job. I will be constructing a new one because this one is slightly in the way of the handbrake. I have no problems with it but my wife does as my arms are longer and it isn't hard for me to yank that e-brake. I will be making a new one this weekend and I will post the dimensions and pics.
  • It looks pretty good, and I can imagine it being very sharp if you have any other red trim. I certainly wouldn't say it sucks. You don't have far to go with those plastic skills.

My only observation is that the plastic makes it hard to see the the "4WD" logo.

Now, imagine how this would look if it were sanded, stained, and in the Wagon with the wooden trunk!
  • Yeah I noticed that also. After I painted it it became harder to see. I will start a new one tomorrow.

Are you talking about my car? :D

It looks good, I like it. I think I might steal your idea and make me one with some stuff laying around the house.
