Suggestions on snow/all season tires?

Before anyone says it... I did search and came upon a good post with a link regarding snow/all season tires but that post was back in 2007.

So I ask all those who drive in snow for your snow tire suggestions for my rt4wd. I am not looking to break the bank but not looking for the cheapest route either. Also looking for something I can get local. My mom offered to buy me some as long as they came from Sears so she could charge them to her Sears card and that I clean my car (she says it looks like all 5 of my boys and their messiness ride with me). Thanks mom! And thank you guys in advance for replying!

  • Really? 21 views and not one reply? You guys must be busy working on your cars!

Anyways, I've got an opportunity to buy a pair of Michelin Arctic Alpins and a pair of Nokian Hakkapeliitta 2s for $40 total with both pairs being 175/70R13s and apparently in excellent condition. I've read that a lot of snow tires should be purchased in sets of 4. Do you think I'd be okay rolling on 2 different pairs of snow tires?
  • I have a nice set of 13's with snow tires on them and they were great. They are of course a german brand but I went with a thinner tire so that they could cut through the snow. If you go wide then the tire will pack the snow instead of cutting through it. I think mine were something along the lines of what you are getting. 175/70/13 or something like that. My wife never ever had an issue in the snow with the snow tires. We had all weather but just wasn't the same as the tires made specifically for snow.
  • I running 195/55R15 Bridgestone Blizzaks. AWD + winter tires make life alot easier when the snow starts falling.

always should remind you how that system
    works...different tire set, different rt4wd response...in a way...

    speed of rotation, friction/radial, size
just a couple of things that will engage the rt4wd
if there is a difference between 4 reference points...

    but not by that much...

so, basically not ok, but ok...

    you know me...

  • I ended up picking up the pair of Michelin Arctic Alpins and a pair of Nokian Hakkapeliitta 2s that I had mentioned in a previous post. All tires are in great condition having only been used for one season. Ironically, I go to pick them up with the crappy tires on my wagon and end up driving home in a snowstorm, eyeing them in my rearview mirror as they all sat in the trunk the whole ride home. Now I need to decide if I wanna mount them on my rims myself and then get them balanced ($10 per tire) or have them professionally mounted and balanced ($16 per tire). Also, I ended up getting an extra Artic Alpin as she had just found it in their garage today. 5 snow tires in excellent condition for only $40!! Thank you Craigslist and Christine from Califon, NJ!!

Now I just need to reattach my driveshaft and replace my broken rear driver's side CV axle. Oh, and fix my heat!!

I bought studded nokian hakkapelita 5 new, probably it's overkill to buy tires almost as expensive as the car but I don't really care.
  • Definitly Blizzaks. Bought a set during the summer at tire rack, they ended up being 32 a piece after discount. I don't drive differently in the summer than the winter now since buying these badboys. I hear they don't last long at all though.
