Rear bumper support - any alternatives?

UPDATE: I made one - click for details

So here's what my bumper support looks like...

I doubt I'll be able to find another rust free one, so I'm wondering if anyone has rigged anything up to work in it's place. I'm thinking a piece of 2x4 for support...and yes, I'm serious. Anyone tried anything else?

a Hatchback or Sedan bumper support might be very similar and need minimal modification, easier to source as well.

OR.. you could go EDM/JDM and have no support whatsoever, just a simple bracket to hold the bumper cover to the car
  • Can you confirm for sure that the EDM and JDM bumper supports are substantially different/lighter than the USDM ones? I tried to use a JDM hatch rear bumper support on my Wagon, and it would not fit whatsoever. And I'm not adverse to modifying things to make them fit. It was just going to be a dog's breakfast to make it work. I'd love to swap in some front and rear bumper supports for weight reduction (Ya, I tried the hatch front one too, and it was very different as well).

yeah i can confirm they are super light. there is no metal under there at all other then a little bracket to hold the cover on. at least it was that way on the Hatchbacks i was messing with in the junkyards in germany.

I'm hoping the JDM or EDM Wagons also have these lightweight rebars.

  • Don't mean to jack your thread, but are there two threaded holes, mabey about 4 to 6 inches apart in the center bottom of the support?
I was scraping parts of a wrecked 4d integra the other day and I pulled a u-haul brand reciever hitch. It attaches to the tow hook dealy in the center or the rear of the car. Then it had two bolts that went up into the bumper support.

I hit this thread for info since your dealing with the piece in question. And I was thinking that I may have to fab something up to make it work.

I wanna pull my bumper to check it out myself but I'm not letting myself pull anything else on the car apart untill i finish all the crap I'm doing to it already.

I don't believe so...but honestly, this thing is so rusty that I wouldn't be able to tell.

    I'm picking up a welder this weekend, so I may fab something together.....or 2x4. Whatever's easier. :o

if you wanted to buy a replacement i found a company called lake erie trading post that has new bumper supports (and rear quarter weld-ins, ect.).
they only have them for the sedan, which i think might be a little different.

    here's the link anyways:

  • Cool...good info. Thanks.

Right now I'm finalizing one I put together myself so we'll see how that does. If not, the sedan one might be worth checking out.

 I didn't even use the support bar. I just welded the bracket that holds the bumber to the car. It working find for me.

Yep so if I understand right, you either added some metal for support first and welded that to the metal on the bumper, or you figured out how to make some brackets or something similar to attach the bumper to... I had the same thought about welding when I flinched at the 2x4 idea, but the plastic has to come off first -- and then go back on somehow. So I am also new at welding so did you stick / MIG? where and how ? Was there a trick to getting the plastic part back on?

    thanks for any detals
