RT AWD diff shatter(edit) Couldn't part with the Wagon

OK so I just turboed my 89 RT AWD and I shattered the gears in my diff. I removed them but I want to know if I remove the gear to the tranny and put the rear back in if my car will run FWD? or if the weight will me transfered to and my car will not go anywhere,,,, I understand that i will be dragging(pulling) the rear end but before I put it back together I wanna know if it will work. should I take my drive shaft off?? ... I am very new to the honda thing and have dealt with toyotas all my life ... please help.. Ill try and post tom pics

Is it auto or manual? They both have a way to switch it to FWD only.

EEEEWWWWWWWWWWWW lol. Sorry bro. I say if you dont have the coint to fix it or get a new trans, you should get it back together and turn the 4wd off (just mt.02). If im remember right, the way to turn the 4wd off on the manual, is some sort of adjustment near the IM. Might have to search it.

    I GOT 280Bhp BEFOR IT BROKE...LOL

Where you on a dyno or something?
  • There's a lever on the transmission just above the area where those transfer gears are housed. There is a link to the thread on how to engage/disengage in the Drivetrain sticky at the top of the page, but it's broken (Haydz?). I would flip the lever, and remove the driveshaft. You'll have the rear portion of the shaft turning all the time at the very least, and maybe the whole thing depending on what the viscous coupler does. I don't know what that will do to the coupler.

I'll try and find the page in my Helms and scan it for you.

You're scaring me though. How were you treating the car? Were you beating on it really hard? Was there lots of slip, wheel hop, etc...?
  • Man I love carnage pics!!!

Maybe some hard launching going on?
  • JL56TCJL56TC New Wagonist
no actually I only beat it up 3 times and that was before I turboed it... I was told once though that the stock drive train can oly handle 248bhp MAX so I was a little high... basically what happened was it was making a little noise then I went to orilly auto to get some oil thinking it was the valves and was 7 blocks from my house driving slower then I probably should aka 4th at 37mph and it made this clunck and the car died ... so I started it back up and it wouldn't go into gear... so I toed it home and thouht it was the clutch ... well I started taking the diff off and there was metal fragments every where I got it apart and this is what I found. .. BTW I have a one piece drive shaft... so I am not sure what you mean by the first and second half .. I ll give it a try though ... and you think im crazy but ill take a pic of that to ...lol

on my mother dude I have never launched that car since it was turbo.... might be i didnt get the oil seal seated right but I dont knoe
  • If your drivershaft was OEM, it would be 2 piece. I would definitely take out the driveshaft if it's one piece. Did you have any drive going to the front wheels? I suspect that part of the problem was the 1 piece driveshaft putting loads on the transfer case that it might not have been able to handle (or so I hope).
  • dayidie2dayidie2 Band Wagon
sounds like there was no VC being used, so the transfer case would have been taking a beating, since the day the 1 piece driveshaft was intstalled locking 4wd in, and shock loading the drivetrain.
  • JL56TCJL56TC New Wagonist
so either way it would work if I take evrything appart.. it will run FWD right
  • Yes, as long as you disengage the lever on the transmission, and pop out the driveshaft, the transmission will send all the power to the front wheels. Make sure you put the smoked gears back into the tranny though. There's no other way to keep the oil from spewing everywhere otherwise.

Decided it was worth keeping so I bought the gears and replaced almost everything in my diff only to find out the clutch was bad to... im so upset I really liked it but i just spent $900 on all new diff parts just to have to change the clutch too...:( how hard is the clutch to change... I hear you have to pull the motor just to do it.. don't know what to do someone help... I was seriously considering parting it or selling it for about $800
  • Were you in a huge rush to get it back on the road? There's a bunch of us here that have spare parts sitting on our shelves. Just as a side note, those gears are the transfer case gears, not the diff.

If you really like it, keep it. WHat else will you buy? Will it perform as well as this things does/did? How much money are you going to spend putting something together that will be as fast and fun as your Wagon? You don't have to drop the engine to change the clutch. It's a little more work than a usual FWD clutch change, but certainly doable. Did you make sure and set the gear lash correctly on your transfer case gears? There are shims that go between the side gear cover and the transfer case, as well as the transfered gear beaing holder/cover (the cover where the flange sticks out that the driveshaft bolts to) and the case housing. If the gear lash is too loose, this will lead to early failure of the gears. Especially with the power you're putting out.

One last question: when you said you were making 280bhp, did you mean 280 whp? Was your horsepower measured on a chassis dyno? Do you have a dyno plot that you could scan and post up?
  • JL56TCJL56TC New Wagonist
Im back Boys.. btw ill post that dyno asap I am actually going to have it dynoed again since it sat all winter and I just built the whole thing again.I wish I could get parts from you guys on the fourms but it does not allow me to see the FS post since I just got in this post. I am still trying to figure out this whole honda thing since I am used to driving my TTC scion. thanks for the info

Nice to see ANOTHER Minnesotan on this site. By chance are you on www.mnhondas.com ?
  • vtecn8ivevtecn8ive Senior Wagonist
You have to drop the transmission to get to the clutch. Tranny is held in by 3 motor mounts. Take off the shift linkage and the reverse signal wiring and a ground wire, front axles, transfer case stuff, exhaust to cat, ummm I can't think of much else, then you just support the motor and lower it so you can pull the tranny out.

    Not a fun job.
  • JL56TCJL56TC New Wagonist
im almost done... just finished putting in the clutch. going to put it back together and hopefully be out this weekend... or maybe next...lol im not on mnhondas.com... to much drama.., i though about it though (vtecn8ive) pmed u
  • for future reference it is my understanding that the transfer case is driven at all times (unless you disengage at the lever)... so removing the gears would still send "all the power" to the front wheels (even if you hadn't disengaged the lever) because there is no Driveshaft for the trans to spin...

whoever had my wagon before me shattered the gears just like you, they just pulled the driveshaft side of the gears and put a metal freezer plug into the transfer case... the car drove just fine
  • JL56TCJL56TC New Wagonist
great... I just fixed it... it kinda sucked but its just not the same without AWD... I recently bought a new Trans fom this co in .JP it was 450 but its brand new well worth the $

I'd be very interested in knowing which place you bought the tranny from.

Ill look at thetag when I get home... it was some JDM website though that I found on GOOOOOOOOOOGLE
  • Nice to see another MN guy on here. I think that makes 4 of us now. Almost enough to have our own meet.

Sorry to see what happen to Wagon. I plan on installing a turbo on my Wagon but I am just front wheel drive so I should be OK. Post some pics of your Wagon.
