1990 wagon... or is it??(clutch fitment probs)

ok whats the deal with this... so far ive bought brake pads and a clutch that dont fit my wagon. i took the pads back to autozone all like... wtf yo? ya gave me the wrong shit. so we were looking and comparing what it should look like and it turned out the 88-89 pads were the right fit. now with the clutch, i bought one thats supposed to be for 90-91 civic. i took it to my mechanic to get it installed and he says it doesnt fit either.
the title says 1990, i looked up the vin and it says its a 1990. wtf? was there a mid year change on these or what?

From my knowledge only the 88 wagons where different. Maybe yours has a 88 clutch/flywheel.

Just because the chassis was built in 90 doesn't mean all the parts are from one...

Someone along the way probably had to replace stuff, and grabbed what they could, regardless of years.... the engine is most likely this problem.

Is your wagon an RT4WD? That would explain the pads..
  • From his introduction thread it is a 2wd.

Find out why it won't fit from your mechanic :?: ...Dia. wrong :?: Spline count wrong :?:

If the transmission is still out, have a look at the input shaft if there is a single groove behind the spline count it is a '89 if there is 2 grooves, it's a '90-'91 and if there is no grooves at all it's a '88

The main difference is 20 (88) vs 21 splines (89-91)
  • wow lots of replies! i still dont know what the deal is on the clutch. the mech said the diameter was wrong and the bearings that came with it didnt fit... i bought it from ebay... got it cheap and was supposed to be a little better than stock. maybe it was just the wrong shit. when will i learn my lesson... this is like the 5th thing in a row that turned out to be wrong from ebay.

i told the mechanic to just go get some crap from some auto parts place and put it on. it was a little more expensive but i need to drive the damn car!

the total for replacing the clutch and wheel bearings was $550 incl parts. SUCKS since i just paid $900 for the car :( :( :( i wish i could do this stuff myself but im a n00b and i have no place to do it either.

Well, you can probably sell that ebay clutch locally, and get back a bit of cash....

    Year
    Flywheel Diameter
    Spline Count
    -88
    200mm
    21-
    -89
    200mm
    20-
    -90
    212mm
    20-
    -91
    212mm
    20-
    -92-00
    212mm
    20-

This info is what I have found for Civics and CRXs, I doubt the wagon is different, but could vary.

So to break it down, 88 is an odd ball year, with a 21 spline transmission, and small flywheel. In 89 they kept the flywheel, but brought in the new 20 spline transmission. 90-91 had the bigger flywheel. So 88 is off on its own, and 89-91 share the same transmission, but different flywheel. 92-00 share the same clutch, but have hydraulic transmissions.

I have an 89, and in order to make my clutch selection more common, I swapped my 200mm flywheel for a newer 212mm flywheel (my flywheel actually came out of a 96-00). Now I can rock the same clutches as 90-91, or 92-00.

So your car could be a 90, but maybe they accidentally through the smaller diameter set up, from the 89s, on your car. If your mechanic MADE it fit, he probably went and bought a used 90-00 flywheel, which will work in your benefit in the future.

    Hope this helped.

Oh, and with eBay... Google is your friend. Do some research on specific parts and brand names, before buying from eBay. I have an F1 6 puck stage 4 clutch in my car right now, and I couldnt be happier, for 180 bucks shipped. I will be trying the XTD next, as a lot of people are using those as well.

Other than that, you just need to be more aware, and careful with what year parts you order.

For all you know, someone swapped the motor in your car, and used a full 89 swap.
  • the clutch i got on ebay is a BBS clutch... i looked for info on it and found very little.
the listing said specifically for 90-91 d15 which is what i have. those dicks dicked me!
i love ebay but lately ive been getting burned by the stupid people on it. last thing i bought was a new fender for my other car. the stupid hooker simply wrapped it in cardboard and taped it up on the sides. no box... no packing... and it was all freakin bent up and dented when it got here. thennn refused to refund the money.

Ask the mechanic if the clutch will fit under the pressure plate & bolt on to the flywheel. The previous owner may have put in a 200mm clutch & yours is a 210mm(the right 1).
    The TO brg. is Wgn.specific.

I did not know this. Please elaborate. I think I've mixed and matched them.

I think only the RT4WD throwout bearing is wagon specific.

Thx. I was the one who wrote that.
  • the rt throwout bearing is wagon specific. I ordered a new one from honda when i put my new clutch in which is a competition sprung six puck, it was knarley all motor, see how it holds under boost
