the wagon died today

1989 Honda Civic Wagon DX
1.5l dualpoint auto fwd

so i was getting on the highway today and all of the sudden the motor starts to loose power. at that point the gas pedal was on the floor so could at least make it off the onramp. after i let off the gas the car immediatly died...........

so now the car is at home. at first it would try to start then burp and try again...so i thought the timing belt might have jumped a couple teeth..no weird noises though so i know there was no piston to valve contact. so i check timing..its fine. pull plugs. all getting spark. it smells like gas so its getting it. try to turn it over again. crank crank big burp.....no it sounds as if the plugs were taken out...no compression at all....

no leaks
no cel

my guess is the headgasket is gone. but i highly doubt all 4 cylinders would go at once......unless a couple cylinders were already gone......but idk

what do you all think?

  • What do you mean by "checked timing"? I'm still betting on the timing belt. You may have lost some teeth off the belt, and the crank is turning, but the cam is not, or it's really out of time with the crank.
  • the belt was my first guess too....i put the bottom end to tdc. made sure the cam was in time...belt has all teeth

I'd do a compression check - it doesn't sound like headgasket. Headgasket will just burn coolant if the blow or overhead. Sounds like either a valve problem or a rod/piston broke personally.
  • Distributors can fail like that.... make sure that the rotor isn't melted. They are famous for the dizzy bearings failing and the it melts the rotor just enough to mis-fire. Check the base of the rotor and see if it is melted.....
