87 vs 88 rear diff's

Does anybody know if the gearing between the 2 years are the same? The reason I'm asking, I'm swapping a AWD platform into a '79 wagon, and it would be alot easier using a solid rear end (the '79 has a solid trailing axle and leafs) vs stationary diff and axles :)

    '87 is a 3rd gen Civic
'88 was a completely redesigned 4th gen Civic.

soooo basically there is nothing similar between the two.

Disagree. They share many of the same transmission internals and gear ratios.

I suggest you either use a early 4x4 or RTAWD trans with the solid rear axle, or swap the FD from the earlier trans to the late trans and use the solid rear axle.
    87 RT FD = 4.467
    89 RT FD = 4.429
Here's a previous post of mine to elaborate. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=6296
