new fuel pump blues

We put a new fuel pump in this 90 ex we bought from a friend of mine. The car hadn't run for a year and we deduced the fuel pump wouldnt' run. It was getting power but no action so we dropped the tank and r&r the pump. Now the car runs but when you take it up the road thru 1st, 2nd, 3rd by that time when you step on the gas the car shuts off unless you let it back to idle. If you stop and restart it the car will have power for about three gears again. It acts like it is running out of gas. if you leave it running after one of these spells it hunts for idle. Also where is the fuel pressur test tap?
Thanks for listening!

You probably have junk in the tank from it sitting so long... i had the same problem with an old Rabbit i used to have...

It would drive fine and then for some reason it'd shut off... fuel starved... and then after a few minutes it'd fire right back up...

you'll have to either replace the tank, or just clean it out really well...

you changed the fuel filter I suppose...
how are things working out for you so far?
  • It does sound like possible fuel contamination to me. Drain old fuel. If when removing the old fuel you notice debris coming out as well, then remove the fuel tank and clean it as mentioned before. Make sure you replace the crush washer at the fuel tank drain bolt. Replace the fuel filter also as mentioned before. The fuel pressure is usually measured at the banjo bolt on the fuel filter. Most aftermarket test gauges come with a Honda/Acura adapter that taps into this connection at the fuel filter.
