Cardboard in front of radiator?

It's pretty cold here today (22*F) and I was driving my girlfriends wago around to charge up the battery. When the car is moving the temperature needle stays at the bottom. When stopped the temperature reading on the gauge is normal.

Was wondering if this is a thermostat problem, or do I need a poor man's winter front (cardboard)?

Probably woldn't be a bad idea to change your thermostat anyways but, the cardboard trick allways worked for me when I lived in Wyoming!
  • If I had to guess, I'd say the thermostat is stuck open. I used to live in colder climates, and even on the coldest days (minus 40c, which just happens to be -40f as well) the car still had heat, and the engine temperature behaved normally. I never needed any sort of rad block off.
  • Where did you live in Wyoming?

and.. where on Majestic Honda is the thermostat listed? I'm having trouble finding it.
  • Ottawa, Ontario. Coldest national capitol after Moscow.
  • I was talking to the guy who used to live in Wyoming.
  • Changing the thermostat prolly will help but the cardboard works too! I too used to live in Ottawa, Canada (home of the longest outdoor skating rink in the world! and Beavertails! Yum, garlic butter and cheese!) and the cardboard helped and I did also get temp readings on my gauge during winter.

Jaker, when did you live there? I left Ottawa the summer of 2001.

lol reminds me of my 90 crx hf with a dohc zc swap I used to have, I'd have to agree with changing the thermostat, but I did the same thing, and lots of cardboard in the front of it, guy before me took out the blower motor, cause he was aiming for lightest crx on the planet earth, or something, so I never had any heat anyway. For a while I was blaming it on the 93 integra radiator I was using, but winter eventually passed. Not cool getting stuck on ice in an HF though.
  • Long ago, I gutted the interior of my first Civic in the quest for lightness. Now, I don't care.
