Automatic transmission filter?

Background for those who don't know - 89 RT4WD automatic, been skipping 2nd gear when warm lately, which is part of my reason for trying to sell it. It was suggested to me that before giving up on my wagon I may want to try changing out the fluid and filter. The fluid was essentially changed out completely when I had that axle seal leak - all the old stuff leaked out as I kept adding new fluid. Not the environmentally friendly way to do it, but it's been months since I replaced the seal, and the fluid is still clean and at the full mark. So I don't think that's the problem.
A clogged filter sounds like a good thing to check, except I can't find any information on one. The Haynes book refers to another section for a fluid and filter change, but that section only covers the fluid. Is there a filter at all? If so, where?

Yes, there is a filter. No, you cannot change it without splitting the case. It's more like a strainer actually, but definitely not shadetree-serviceable. Inline filters do exist, they're commonly used on domestic autos with suspected cooler contamination. It works alot like an inline fuel filter.
