The "Wheezee" is dope, but I don't have the knowledge/ tools to port everything out. I guess the only real option for me is to stay a6 and do as much as I can to meet the "Wheezee" specs. I mean, really all I want is more power/ torque for driving up to the mountains with a full load. Plus, I want to run regular gas and not have major issues when smogging the beast.
So that's it a modded a6. Thanks to everybody for helping me make a choice. If you have any ideas on a6 mods that are BAR/REF friendly I'd love to hear them. I like the 4-2-1 header idea.
You don't have to do all the porting he did...
Instead of reworking the stock intake manifold, you use D16y8 manifold and larger throttlebody. Maxbore does great work/prices http://www.maxbore.com/
Instead of all the work he did to the header, you run an aftermarket header(with a CARB eo number, like DC sports).
You can avoid the expense of the aftermarket cam if you get sohc zc...it already has a slightly more aggressive cam profile(that's where the extra 10hp comes from). They are available from a number of cali engine importers for dirt cheap.
You can use 88-89 D16a1 pistons instead of the dohc ZC PM7 pistons...brand new ones straight from Acura cost around $40 each http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org/ . With the increase in compression, you might need to run a higher octane or compensate with some ecu tuning and knocking down intake temperatures a bit (CAI, Hondata IM gasket).
One last little gem...make sure you use known good injectors. Given the age of most of these motors, any injector you pick up could be worn out and tired. And short of something breaking off, you'd never know. Check out http://cruzinperformance.com/injsteps.html
But like I said, if you want easy...just stick w/ the sohc zc, y8 manifold and I/H/E.
Honda-tech had a good thread on the ZC SOHC vs the D16a6. Most people who posted seemed to think the ZC is a great motor, but was harder to find parts for. One poster pointed out that the two motors were only different in the head area, and most parts were interchangeable.
What I got out of this was that if the difference is mostly in the head, why not just spend my money on a cam, port and pollish, and intake? That way I could get it past BAR/REF no problem and still have a power increase. I'm still open to the ZC idea if there's a big difference that I don't know of, but davens even you stated in your old engine breakdown artical on Honda-performance.org,
"I like the ZC. ItÕs DOHC design makes it rev high smoother than the SOHC Honda engines. And with adjustable cam gears, the DOHC engines are easier to tune, with better results. Many people get them expecting a drastic difference but are disappointed with the results. This could stem from several reasons. Age, worn out engine, mismatched components etc. Get a healthy engine, the ZC ecu, the short-geared transmission, and an adequate header and it will run circles around the stock si engine BUT if you remove one of those things from the equation, it will slow the ZC down. It has a little more torque than the D16A6, but not much. Where you really notice the difference is 4000 RPMs and higher and at freeway speeds."
Noted this is about the DOHC, but even more the point to tune a D16a6.
The problem with Honda-Tech is that 7 out of 10 members are idiots. I saw that thread and it wasn't that good. And yes that quote is about the dohc zc...which wouldn't be legal for you...did you miss the bit about running circles? The point of that was to tell people to do the swap right.
The sohc zc is 100% legal in cali as a replacement for the d16a6. They are identical enough. However, the cams are different. How do I know? Because I've actually indexed both sohc zc cams that you could possibly get and compared them to D16a6. Taken and measured with my own two hands. How many dumbasses over there can say that?
Since the a6 and sohc zc are essentially the same, getting parts isn't any harder. That's ridiculous.
This is also true for the dohc zc. You just need to know what to ask for. 99% of the interchange parts used are either for A6 or A1...with a couple of B16 and Prelude parts sprinkled in.
For a worn out tired 200k A6 to be on par with a sohc zc you'll need to rebuild it and buy a cam. I'm all for building an A6 but can you rebuild an A6 and buy a cam for less than $400? Probably not. Especially if you're not doing your own labor. Engine building gets expensive quick. And you'd have to get a good a6 cam...many aftermarket cams make little or no improvements and can even be unreliable. The sohc zc cam is oem quality and proven to get that extra 10hp.
I'm telling you for the last time, go to an engine importer and get a good quality sohc zc. The much lower mileage and hp increase before using any bolt ons or doing any rebuild work make it an outstanding value.
OK, it's the SOHC ZC. After the verbal whack in the head davens gave me I better. Just a couple of BAR/REF questions.
Will I have to declare the change of motor or will it be close enough to an a6 that it won't matter? Where's the best spot to pick up a motor? Does anybody know a spot in the SF/ Bay Area so I can save on shipping?
I've understand there are a couple of actual importers (not resellers, which are okay but you pay mark up) in the SF area but I can't name any.
How realistic is trip to LA?
Alright, I'm keeping to the plan with the SOHC ZC, but I keep seeing much more elaborate swaps with BAR stickers selling on CL. I can't front, I really want to go DOHC ZC. Pacifier makes it sound like too much fun. Plus it would be fun to shock a fool off the line once in awhile.
they did make a vtec with more hp then a sohc zc its called a d15b vtec or for those who like to call it a mini me around 130 plus whp nice little motor
i am for the dohc zc too. i am from so cal and far as i know it is leagel if you use everything for a 1st gen integra. i am looking for a busted up car or a front clip for a 89 teg.
if i just get the long block what else do i need to get it running? is the wiring the same? the wiring changes piss the shit out of me.

Anyone ever tried shaving the engine stamp and putting a new one on?

that's what i know of it....someone correct me if im wrong.
Take a look at the top sticky in this topic. Pacifier(he's got the DOHC ZC) has done a great job of listing the parts needed.
