Big thanks to you! I may see if a machinist friend can reproduce them in aluminum...

Well, I finally got a chance to work on the old whore tonight. It's been a busy week, no time for play :(

I've been hunting everywhere for some M12x1.25x210 bolts- maybe they don't exist?
I was able to buy 12x1.75x200 from McMaster Carr, along with a 1.25 pitch die

    841.jpg

The only way to make them long enough was to grind off the hex down to the shank diameter, then cut threads.

    842.jpg

here the K-member is just hung loosely to get some measurements for the spacers

    843.jpg

I used some 1"square tubing for spacer stock. (Why? because I had it laying around :P )

    844.jpg

Just barely tacked these up, I want to pull everything up tight with the crossmember before welding

    845.jpg

    And here it's in place

    846.jpg

I think I'll weld it in, actually stitch the member to the frame add-ons. I'm not sure I want to rely on those noodly 8" long homemade studs alone...

Looks good. I have a bunch of finish welding to do here and there, once I'm a little more certain that what I have done will work

    847.jpg

One of the uncertain areas- whether the UCA notch needs to be extended. I'm not sure of the coil spring clearance yet. That's why I skipped over it to get the rest mocked up.

there are no words. too stunned

thanks again for the front shaft, it's working wondrously!
  • So what's the plan for the steering rack? You gonna mount it 4" lower and extend the shaft?

Also, will the stock brake lines be long enough to reach the calipers, or will you need to make longer ones?

The rack wil bolt right back into that crossmember, yes, 4" lower. We dismantled a donor rack for the shaft to use for an extension. Along with a spare steering column or two, I'll figure something out :?

Brake lines? I'm not sure yet. I want to use stainless hoses. I'll probably use off-the-shelf caliper hose assemblies, then customize the hardlines from the prop. valve to meet them.
I've got the same hurdle to clear on the rear brakes, too.

Got a little welding done this afternoon, but it's pebbles' birthday.

    Happy Birthday, 'oney!

Oh for some reason I was thinking the rack mounted to the firewall. Now I get it.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought the lines for the rear brakes ran along the trailing arm all the way up to the area where the compensator arm connects. Oh that reminds me, did you also relocate the mounting point for the compensator arm to keep the original orientation of the trailing arm? In that case I could see the lines needing to be extended there.

Looks good Bam!! Can't wait to see this thing bombing in some Georgia mud/clay!! hahahaha

Wow this thing is amazing, takes dedication to build something like that, cant wait to see it finished

On the bolts Fastenal Has them http://www.fastenal.com/web/products/de ... 025&ucst=t

I don't know if you can order them direct or need to go through a store or have an account. I suspect it might be a special order item.

ive got a handful of these stores local to me .... LET ME KNOW WHAT U NEED .... Bam BAM

Thanks, but... damn I already surmounted that pile! Guess I should have spoken sooner.

A LOT of this build goes on in my head- I'm never really present in the here and now when I'm working on it. What I'm actually doing today was thought about a week ago. It may sound funny, but I've no idea about how some facets will shake out.

What I do enjoy is the challenge of making it happen. There's no doubt that it'll work, it's just a mental workout. Some nights I just crack a beer and stare at it... I need fodder sometimes so I can sleep.

clearly whatever he is doing is working for him..

you must tell us your secrets. I bet it has something to do with yoga
  • Making braided stainless brake lines is a lot easier than making new prop valve to chassis mount hard lines. I'd leave the chassis mounted stuff as is, and make some custom braided lines. I can send you in the right direction for the parts.

thanks! problem is, the chassis-mounted stuff is all moving. The prop valve mounting location went away when I sectioned the shock towers, the brackets where the lines transition from hardline to flex need to be relocated, etc... look where the front ones ended up!

i THINK I'll be able to tweak the OE hardlines to fit and use off-the-shelf SS hoses. I do have the tools to bend and flare lines in any way necessary, I just don't think it'll be necessary.

Big question for me right now in this department is which SS lines to buy. I WILL end up with rear discs, but maybe not at first. I guess they're not that dear, I'll just get drum brake ones to start.

I appreciate you looking in. keep me on my toes!
  • If you get DC2R Braided lines on the front they are longer than Wagon ones as they are for 282mm Brakes which of course sit further out. I dunno exactly how much longer though
  • bam-bambam-bam Council Member
Sweet! I'll check into it.. I have EX front knuckles for it already.
  • If you buy the right braided lines, when the time comes you might be able to get away with just swapping the ends that terminate at the drum slave cylinder/disc caliper. You may have to make a longer line though in the back. 90-91 CRX Si had discs in the back, so they'll have the right lines for discs. Maybe stick with rubber lines in the back until you go to discs.
