Adjusting the clutch

So what's the best way to get to the adjusting nut on the clutch cable? Can you reach it by going down through the engine compartment or is it easier to get to from underneath the car? My clutch is getting really tight and I'm hoping I can fix that for the time being with a simple adjustment.

it is easiest if you can wiggle both hands down from the top. use one hand to pull up on the lever to relieve any tension and one to turn the plastic adjusting nut.

it can probably be done from the bottom too, i've never tried or needed to.

definately easiest to do it from the top, just turn the plastic nut.
  • I've never had to pull up on the clutch arm. I always just pulled up on the upper portion of the clutch cable to lift the nut off it's seat. Oh, and definitely easier from the top. I don't think there's any way you could snake your hands around all the crap that's in the way if you tried from the bottom.

    Thanks for the input everyone.

For some reason I thought the adjusting nut was on the firewall side of the transmission so since I couldn't see it over there when I was looking for it I figured I'd ask you smart people how to get to it. Once I actually pulled my finger out and followed the right line the location became pretty damned obvious!

I adjusted it a few turns and I got the clutch to engage/disengage about half way down the pedal throw (previously it was right up at the top), but the thing is still too tight and I feel like I have a racing clutch rather then a regular street version. I'm hoping to nurse this thing along for a few more weeks until I have access to a garage since Fall is in the air here and I don't want to work on this thing while laying in the mud.

    Thanks again for the help.
  • Your clutch pedal is probably broken. Do a search. Many of us have suffered the blight of the broken clutch pedal pivot pin.
  • oh no...not the
the broken dutch pedal pivot pin...

    the agony, the horror...
and whats that pin doing in...
