Blew up my motor in my wagon!

well, i blew up the motor in my wagon. Not sure exactly what happened, but i know the bottom end is gone (see pic of spark plug below. I'm going to pull the motor here this next week and see what happened. I have another d16a6 block sitting in the garage that I'm going to rebuild. I've already ordered some p29 pistons, stock rods, acl main and rod bearings and i'm going to get new main seals from honda. I'll post pics as soon as i get them.

Got the rods and bearings in today. Dropped the pistons and rods off at the machine shop to get pressed together. Hopefully will have the motor assembled Saturday. Might pull the motor out of the wagon tomorrow and get pictures of the damage. I'm really curious what happened.
  • hmmm you'll be dong an autopsy on your motor huh. i'll wait for the results....

Well, motor is out and tore apart. It wasn't what I thought it was. It was a valve that broke and just chewed the crap out of the piston. Here are the pics. I got the pistons and rods back today, they're all pressed together and ready for assembly. Also, see those chunks of metal in cylinder 2. Those got sucked out of cylinder 1 through the broken valves hole into the intake and then sucked down into cylinder 2. These pics are exactly as we found it. Never seen anything like it.

Believe it or not, I didn't hear anything. I was listening to music, but wasn't up very loud. Just have to JL 6.5" speakers running off the deck. I'm really suprised I didn't. I honestly thought I lost fuel or spark. Really weird. Should have motor back in a couple days, I'll have more pics.

I'm still waiting for the motor to get back from my buddy. He's been busy finishing up a few other jobs. I decided to go ahead and get the other parts I wanted for the head so I don't have to pull the head back off later. I ordered new valve stem seals from honda ($40) and some stiffer valve springs from Exospeed in Cali ($130). I want an 8k redline. I've already tore the head down and it's ready for assembly when I get the springs in. I'll keep you guys updated.

should toss a new oil pump in the new block if its in the budget.
  • stampernstampern Senior Wagonist
Not too worried about the pump, the block is actually the original block out of my 4dr EX and was swapped out with less than 150k, so should be good. I got the motor back from the shop, just waiting for the head to get finished. I redid all the valve seats and cleaned up all the valves. Putting new valve stem seals in and stiffer valve springs. I'm still waiting for the springs to arrive, that's the only old up right now. I can't wait to get this running again.

Finally got my valve springs in. Got some Iskenderian Valve springs and exhaust valve seats from Exospeed. Gonna head to the shop tomorrow and get the head put together so I can get the car running hopefully this weekend. Will have pics tomorrow.

you MANGLED that head, piston just needs some bondo tho

Well finally got the block and head in the car. Timing is set and valves have been adjusted. Just have radiator, exhaust manifold (just the upper section) and intake manifold and wiring. Should have it done easily by tomorrow. Might go spend a little more time tonight if I decide to not be lazy.

I'm thinking more along the lines of JB Weld - bondo is a little light. he he

Well, guys, it's running. Got it fired up today. But I was a dumbass and completely forgot something. I completely forgot that when the old motor blew it shot chunks of the piston into the intake manifold. So as soon as I revved the motor up over 2k today is sucked in a couple chunks which got stuck in 2 of the valves and locked them open. So I pulled head back off and got the pieces back off and cleaned out the intake manifold. Fired it up again and I must have missed a piece or two cause it did it again. I decided to call it a night, but I'm gonna pull the intake manifold off tomorrow and clean the hell out of it. The motor ran PERFECT though. Idled perfect. I'm so excited to get this on the road and broken in. My roommate recorded the first fireup on his phone I'll see if I can get it posted.

Well, I cleaned out the intake and the head last night. Everything is running great so far. Got 40 miles on it and no issues. Compression check shows 180psi on all cylinders. Can't wait to get the stage 2 cam and the ecu chipped and rev it to 8k. he he
