1991 WAGON 4x4 5 Speed....Should I buy It or not? **********

Hello everybody!

Anyways, as you know im new to the forum so I have to introduce myself...here we go...

I currently own a 1995 Civic Vx, 123k purchased from the original owner. I flew from FL to DC to buy it and then drove it home. I have had it about 1.5 yrs now and it has been a flawless car that gets amazing gas mileage. The average with the A/C on during the summer I get 43mpg in the winter I tend to get better mileage because I dont have to run the A/C...and yes Florida has winters they are just mild in comparison. 8) to yours

Anyways, browsing the net as I tend to do all too often I came across the holy grail of wagons a 1991 RT 5 speed in perfect condition. I will post a picture.

Anyways, should I keep what I currently have or buy the wagon?

How are these cars on the interstate? What RPM is the engine running at @80mph? Are they loud?

Lots of cabin noise? I am not expecting a benz, but in comparison to other hondas of this generation how do they compare?
Do wagons tend to have more problems than other Hondas? I know the body parts are hard to find..
Do the manual transmissions and the 4x4 tend to have problems?

The car looks like a car from the late 90's, Does not look like most wagons I have seen.

What are the main reasons for getting a wagon? Well for me I like the idea of being able to carry a longboard, kayaks, bikes, more people.

I am on the fence here. I hope you guys can help me out.

Cheers! :D :o  :?

get the wagon and as for do wagons tend to have more problems then other hondas no a wagon is pretty much like any other honda will run forever with tender love and care
  • So do you need to sell your current car in order to get the wagon? If not then why not pick up the wagon and have both?
  • I would probably sell my hatch after I got the wagon........I only need one car.

We're going to tend to be wagon-biased here, so the consensus will be "BUY THE WAGON!"

It will NOT approach the mileage you're getting with your VX. I haven't had a RT4WD car, but the dpfi DX wagons in stock trim net low 30s in mixed driving.

As far as noise and comfort, well, it's an older car. Civics did tend to get more refined as time went on. If your weatherstrips are good and your stereo loud, it's not bad  Most of my wind noise on both cars is from the rack on top.

One more thing: Most of the 4wd cars were sold and used up north. Beware of the cancer.
  • Here are some pictures of the car.
  • Here is some info about the car.

1991 honda civic wagon all wheel drive 1.6 motor, ice cold a/c,5 speed, stage 2 clutch, powder coated valve cover, header, aem intake,18" wheels with new tires, skunk 2 camber kit front and rear, tein struts and coilovers, projector headlights, sparco steering wheel, hub and lock, sparco shift knob, emergency brake ,clutch, brake and gas petals

    The paint is original.

The interior looks as nice as in the outside....No tears in any of the seats....clean clean clean.
  • buy it
  • How much do you think is a fair price for this car.

Engine was totally rebuilt from the bottom up. The body has a 170k on it, the engine was rebuilt last yr and has the receipt from the shop that did the work.

    Thanks!

it depends on how much your willing to pay... but to me it looks to be worth about 2800-3200...

especially if there is no rust!!!
  • Thanks for the comments....I wish a couple more ppl would say what they think the car is worth.

    Thanks in advance.
  • it could just be the picture, but the passenger side front wheel looks dented.
and i would pay like $2k for it. maybe $2.5k.
  • Can anyone else tell me what they think its worth?

Same here, I'd say it's worth $2500(around that area).

Part of the fun is actually finding a car that hasn't been touched, and this owner obviously loved to fiddle with this car...but it's been taken care of very well so take that into consideration.

It has COLD AC! Some wagons didn't even come with that option so yeah, I'd jump on it but work your negotiation skills before someone else buys it before you do.
  • Now, I'm no expert, but.....
My RT4WD is a Six Speed, and I`ll bet that the car in question is too!
As fer your questions - honda reliable, high revving at 80mph, decent on gas, cabin noise depends upon tire choice, great traction, vesatile, spacious interior configuration... I'd pay at least CDN$3000+
    PS - no cupholders
  • The guy wants $3500 for the car. I talked him down to $2900.00 without the rims, do you think I should buy it?

Or should I wait and try to find one for less.

Clean title, rust free(check the rear wheel arches) and no frame damage are the most important criteria for me. Wagon looks super clean in the pics. I paid 2200 for one of my wagons that was not a 4wd, just a regular 2wd DPFI 5spd. But it met my criteria and was in exceptional condition from the original owner. That's what it was worth to me and these are getting increasingly difficult to come across especially 4wd and good condition. 2900 seems fair to me if it meets the above criteria and those big wheels would kill your fuel mileage anyway. Good luck.

that is definitely a good price for a rust free RT.
  • Did all 1991 RT4WD wagons have the super low gear?

The owner of this car swapped the gear shifter so from the pics I dont know if it has this low gear.

I asked him about it he didnt seem to know what I was talking about.

The reason I want the gear is for a pulling a small boat up the boat ramp...I am sure it could do it without it but it is nice to have....just in case.

Once again thanks for all the replies.
  • damn i would pay 3500 for that if its as clean as you say it is

im pretty sure they all came with the SL gear but i have been wrong before
  • HaydzHaydz Moderator
All EE RT4WD came with the SL gear AFAIK. Most people can't actually get it into the gear because they don't try hard enough. Have a read.
  • Thanks for posting!
I checked out the thread as well, lots of good info.

I am getting the owner of the 1991 wagon to send me the receipt for the work done to the engine.

Waiting to see if he can come up with the receipt for the work done to the car. I dont want to buy the car and then have to worry about the timing belt and water pump, if it was done I want to see the receipt...just kind of the way I am...?

I also came across a 1983 Mercedes 300td (diesel) wagon in great shape, for a really price.

    decisions, decisions...
  • ogwagonogwagon Wagonist
The old school MBZ diesels are pretty bullet proof also and now many people are converting them to run on biodiesel/veggie oil. But when they do require repairs they tend to put a big dent in the wallet. For ease of repairs and overall practical use I would still go for the Honda, especially if you are a do-it-yourselfer.
  • I am still waiting for the receipt for the work that was done on the car.

    I appreciate all the replies.

If anyone else has a value they would place on the car and would like to share it, it would be greatly appreciated. I just dont want to overpay because of my lack of knowledge on the market value of these cars.

    Thanks!
  • just buy it and replace the t-belt and water pump :)
  • yeah...I guess I would want the car for less money if I was going to do that.
