motor swap possibilities?

i will be getting a 86 wagon for free and the only problemm is is that it doesn't pass smog, i need to change the motor but because it is carburated(probably spelled wrong) i have heard it is very difficult to put in a newer fuel injected motor. its front wheel drive it that helps any? kinda a noob to the wagon thing and to the forum :?:

I haven't looked at the site in a while but over on redpepper's there was a guy that came up with something fairly easy using D16Y8 harness, that is if you can't find an actual SI harness of the same vintage.

so redpeppers is a website? i was just wondering because i know thhe fuel injections have computers and the carburated motors dont, wouldn't i have to do all thhe crazy wiring and like redo everything from the ecu to the gas tank? all electronically monitored by the ecu right?

What people do is pretty much swap the entire harness from an injected car. There's a guy that figured out how to tie in the front part of a Y7-Y8 harness because I guess there's less to tie into the dash and it's more of a direct engine to ecu route.

There was guy on ecomodder's site that made a newer dash harness fit into one of the older cars but that would be quite a task for the unprepared. I guess he snipped most of the plugs and connected them to a newer harness. That would be a lot of work and probably many hours with wiring diagrams.

The links below are to those sites. Redpepper is an amazing resource for the 87 and earlier models.
