so i was putting off doing the walbro fuel pump

anyhow didnt do it for a month now because ef's have to drop the tank! hate it! well i'll cut this short, i cut out the old wagons floor were the pump should be, over sized of coarse to overlay the new wagon's floor when i cut a hole.... i looked at the underside many times... driveshaft, catback, even the rear diff looked like it had to come out! F that! well took an hour to cut the old wagons floor nice, and i didnt want to cut into the tank! walked over to the 4wd.... took the seat out pulled back the carpet and,,, WTF! there is an access panel! why out of all the 4th gen civic's only 4wd models have it. also i have never read on this forum "access panel for fuel pump on rt4wd models" oh well jokes on me :)

It's probably because of the immense pain in the ass it would be to drop all those parts you mentioned to be able to lower/drop the tank.

Yeah it is mentioned somewhere in the depths...

hahaha yea real deep, i figured someone has found it, but then again its real hard to find out everything needed to know on a whim, and when its something you dont think will even be there, i mean my 2wd didnt have one, it seemed like every other 4th gen civic! its all good though, i dig having my first 4th gen f/pump acces panel chassis! :)

Well thats great news. I have to do this within the next week or so. A big thumbs up from me for the heads up!! Cause you know damn well when the rod bearings let go in the middle of a race, I had a full tank. Sofa king cool! Im smiling ear to ear right now, lol.

Those access panels are nice to have. I just had a fuel pump go bad on my suburban and just my luck the day before I filled up that damn 44 gallon tank. NO ACCESS PANEL and 44 gallons of fuel = not much fun

yes my friend it suck for shure, most US cars have to drop the tank! and the hundreds of pumps ive had to change in them, 99% of them
had full tanks.... im now thinking it has something to do with pumps get hot when the tank gets empty, then on the fill up cool fuel shocks the pumps, then they fail. maybe you never know, but ive changed more GM pumps than any other for shure!

so moral of one of the stories is, dont let you tank get completely empty =)

Or when the pump fails on your Chevy/GM truck, haul out the angle grinder with a cut off wheel and "make" yourself an access panel. That's what my neighbour did with his 89 C1500!
  • Which model Walbro are you using on the 4WD ?

Might as well do it now before I need it rather than when I need it :)

I was really going to do this but we had a nice jack with some lumber underneath to support it and it made it pretty easy. You don't know how close I was to cutting this truck up
  • So what model walbro fuel pump for the 4wdRT? Honda has different part number for the civic si/crx vs the wagon 4wd...
  • JakerJaker familEE
The gas tank in the FWD is identical to the one in the RT4WD and it is different from the tank in the Hatch/CRX, so I would buy the one for the RT.
  • Right but the walbro pump just says 88-91 civic/crx. There are some people that say that the walbro fits the 4wd and others that say modifying was necessary, since the pump sits at a slight angle in the tank on the 4wd. I just didnt want to buy the walbro and then not have it fit my wagon. So are we all certain that this thing fits the 4wd tank? I'd like to hear more people who say they are actually running it.

I am running it in my FWD Wagon tank which is identical to the RT4WD tank I bought used before I knew that. I had to mod it slightly to fit. Don't ask me what I did. It was too long ago. Oh, and I bought mine for the hatch/CRX. I didn't find a Wagon specific kit when I was shopping.
  • Im telling you the regular ef walbro fuel pump works in the rt tank. The pick up touches the bottom of the tank thats it.
