Started My BB6 Prelude Cluster Swap

I'll take and upload some snaps later this afternoon, unfortunately my phone and Imageshack hosting don't get along so my pics wouldn't upload properly ...

The cluster is sourced from a 2000 Prelude Type-SH, any '97-'01 Prelude cluster will work for this project. I liked the overall design of the Prelude cluster, the amber backlighting, as well as the lit needles and 150mph speedo (like I'll ever need it, haha).

So far I've got the cluster physically mounted in the space where the OEM cluster would sit. I had to remove the metal brackets that originally attached it, as the BB6 cluster is much deeper than the wagon unit. The cluster hood will definitely need to be trimmed and I haven't figured out yet how I want to do it to maintain an OEM appearance.

As it sits right now the temp and fuel gauges read perfectly. The tach works and I'm beginning to question the accuracy of the stock wagon tach - with it, my redline was displayed as 7000, on the BB6 unit I'm on the limiter at 7400 ... I'm led to believe 7400 is correct (I have a PM7 ECU I believe?) as the tone of my exhaust noticeably changed at 2500 rpm and again at 3500 rpm, and is indicated properly on the BB6 cluster. The idle is shown at a smooth 900 rpm as it was on the OEM unit as well. The CEL is grounding out through another wire on the harness (probably due to my temp wiring job) and the right side of the cluster doesn't illuminate (again due to my shoddy wiring) but these are all traceable errors with simple fixes. The oil pressure and brake warning lights function properly as do directional signals, and surprisingly enough almost every wire color matched between the wagon harness and the BB6 cluster harness. I used a diagram for an '88 CRX and have noticed some wire color differences between it and the wagon, so if anyone has a diagram for an '88 wagon that I could use that would be great.

And a teaser snap (the only one that would load, haha):

try using a 90-91 wagon cluster cover, as it is about an inch higher then the 88-89 clusters..

Good to know. Are they the same as '90-'91 Civic hoods? I was considering modifying a CRX hood to fit as they're more rounded like the top of the 'Lude cluster.

I may end up cutting two hoods apart, plastic-welding them together and sanding/painting it. For right now the dash mat makes it look pretty cool even without a hood under it.

no they are not the same as the Hatchback, especially the Sedan and CRX.

however, if you are going to be cutting them, you could possibly graft a hatchback cover the best. its the most similar to the wagon.
  • how did this turn out? pics? very intrested!

I know for 2000-01 Integra clusters there is the anti-theft linked to the cluster, i'm curious if the prelude has the same feature for 00-01.

Sorry for the delay fellas, I've been busy with a lot of stuff.

I still have the Prelude cluster half-assed into the dash, the speedo still doesn't work [probably wiring issue on my part]. I've done some reading and it seems I can use the internal speed-sensor in the stock cable speedo cluster to run the Prelude cluster's speedo - I'm going to try rewiring it that way and see if I can get an accurate reading.

As far as hood fitment, I haven't messed with that either, but it's in the works, I've got another brown hood that I plan on hacking apart.

Since the Prelude I pulled my cluster from was a '00 Type-SH, it had the immobilizer light installed - I simply didn't wire it in.

For the winter though, I'm going back to the stock cluster - I like to know how fast I'm going in the snow.

On a side note, I've considered attempting to fit an EG Si cluster into the wagon, as I've got a donor cluster, and plastic surround to cut up. Wiring would be the same I'd imagine.

I'll try to remember to post a pic of it in my dash.
