Southern LA wagon overhaul

Band Wagon
Hey what's hapnin y'all?
I've got a '91 wagon that I've been drivin' about 5 years and many thousand miles. odometer @ 240,000 and I beleive its the original motor and tranny. the tranny had issues when I bought it but figure it was alright after the 2 hour drive from New Orleans. It rattles. kinda like the syncros are rattlin'. It's been a really great car in all. never had to do much outside of general maintenance. Well recently it's been getting worse mpg and runnin r e a l s l o w. I can turn the crank pulley easily with my hands.
I've been doin' some readin' here on the forum about swaps. I am currently looking to swap to a sohc vtec and tranny. mainly to improve performance and mpg. I've got some questions about the wiring harness adaptation and drive line convert.
in specific...I'm planning on getting a 92-95 sohc vtec with its engine harness, an ecu and a odb0 to odb1 adapter (unless its just as easy to repin) What needs to be repinned on the car side? Is it the same plug on the vtec engine as the non vtec chassis? I've read HowTo but it is a litle unclear in some areas. Also, will the splines on the tranny line up with my axles?
I am currnetly planning this project next week. I would like to order the engine monday and have my head wrapped around the wiring before it arrives. mechanics is a necessary hobby passed down from my father. I've done some large american car/engine work, along with some VW. this is my first honda swap. While I have it apart I'm gonna rebuild the front end and steering. Should I do the rack n pinion? or have it done? do people do it professionally? is it hard? can I do it in my small fundamental backyard shop? so many questions :?:
I want to keep my wagon goin'. It has gotten me and my gear to alot of gigs and lessons. I would like to make the upgrade to vtec for the extra kick in the paints. most times I'm haulin my gear and that's like havin' a full car of people.
Can't wait to get started and I'm happy to be part of the krewe.

No, you can't use the engine harness- you need to modify the existing harness. It's pretty easy. Search MPFI swap, you'll come up with several versions all saying the same thing in a different way use the one that makes sense to you.
