Some kind of fuel management and a wideband. Probabaly some kind of boost gauge to make sure you dont exceed 7-8 lbs of boost would be of help too. Im pretty sure theres a link in the helpfull links section for homemade turbo kits. You should go browse around there for a while. Best of luck, and if for some reason you cant find info, let me know.

something told me shenrie would be all over this topic before i finished reading but yea uhhhh
    what he said ......
the actual set up can be basically any thing you can throw together ive seen horrible stuff work great but tuning is the key just make sure you know why something does something and what perimaters need met
ie. fuel to boost how much boost is safe ... id say 5-7 lbs reliable happy boost make sure your waste gate is good and working properly boost spikes seem to be the number one killer of a homebrew or low budget kit
turbos are surrounded by tons of hocus pocus bullshit do your homework and make sure it comes from reliable sources go on honda tech they have about 7,000 pages of turbo crap ....

I have built many kits, the best info for lower budget setups is here, read as much as possiable then pm me there(same name) if you have questions, we can be unkind to noobs :?

  • i am going to put in the turbo next month. what is a wide band? i have 440 injectors do i need fuel management? i have slite play in the shaft is it still ok? what is the easyest way to get oil?
  • highroller54highroller54 Band Wagon
A wide band is a 02 sensor and display so you can read your air/fuel ratio to determine whether your too rich or too lean (used for tuneing). yes you need fuel management for 440's. Some shaft play is ok. You get oil with a oil line kit that hooks into you oil pressure sending unit feed.
  • i am thinking of geting an ecu. dose hondata have an obd-0 system? hows zdyne? are there any others that will work with a DOHC ZC and turbo setup?

do i have to drop the oil pan for the return from the turbo?

Hondata used to do obd-0, but only on pr3 and pw0.
Their new system kicks a$$...no more chip burning and datalogging included in the regular price (around $500). But it only supports obd-1. It would be worth it though. I'm seriously considering doing an obd-0 to 1 migration on my CRX to run this ecu.

Zdyne supports obd-0 and was/is nice...just expensive. Actually, they lowered their prices to be competitive with Hondatas new stuff. But they quit improving/releasing new product 5+ years ago. So as long as it does exactly what you need it do in this current form(no datalogging), its a viable product. Tech support consists of one guy, who is really nice and does what I'm sure is his best, but tends to overpromise.

You do have the option of the "free" products...Turboedit and chip burning, but its rather technical and requires about $300 in equipment.
  • were can i get a turboedit chip. i got someone that i can get an ecu with a chip for 200. he wasnt sure if it could retard the timing and give it enough fuel for about 10 lbs of boost. i am going to run 2-5 lbs with a stock motor. i want to beable to run more later. i want to get it in in a few weeks. i just got a 1st gen dsm bov, and an intercooler from a 89 supra. i dont want to get an fmu or a timing retard. i need an ecu asap.

Turboedit is a program that lets you customize the fuel and timing maps. When you're finished, you burn this custom tune on to a $2 chip and put it in the ecu. The ecu has to be socketed to insert chips, vs an ecu with a soldered chip (like a lot of "chipped" ecus).
But if I'm telling you this, and no offense meant here, this is probably not the route for you to go because as I said earlier, its very technical and involves buying special equipment.
All of your chip burning questions can be answered at pgmfi.org
Whether or not you understand all of it (I don't), remains to be seen.
