RT4WD how to drop the oil pan??

I just picked up a 91 rt4wd that had a turbo mounted (no charge piping installed yet). I want to de-turbo it and put it back to stock.

however, I need to drop the oil pan to take care of the oil line that has been welded to there.

I was peeking around and was baffled with how the hell am I suppose to get that pan off with part of the tranny in the way?

Any advice please!

Just cap it and call it good. I think you may have to remove the trans to fully remove the pan.

According to the Helms, drain the engine oil, the transmission oil, drop the prop shaft (front to rear driveshaft), remove the transmission bash plate, remove the transfer case, remove the clutch cover, drop the oil pan. Like Skinny mentioned though, if possible, just cap the fitting, unless you're anal like me.

Yank the fitting from the pan and weld a piece over the hole if you dont wanna screw with all that and you dont want to cap it. Or just run the charge pipes and rock it turbo.

 Two things not to do when your oil pan is on: 1. Drill into it for an oil return line. 2. Weld up the hole from an oil return line.

DOHC ZC pans are the same as the RT4wd pans if maybe you know someone who has a spare.

Okay i will bite, why dont you weld on a oil pan? As for drilling. I drilled my LS-T pan with a step bit when I did the turbo. Just make sure to wash it out really good.

If you plug up the hole you might want to make sure its air tight so you dont run it to crank case pressure problems, or worse oil some how getting out.

Skinny we have a term for that here. Rangi.

Where the fitting is there is a leak coming from it. So I want to drop it and clean up the welds, then I'll either cap it or I'll find a Dohc Zc or call around to the local junkyards to find a pan.

Right now I'm at the point if I want to invest in the turbo part of it, or if I want to drop a d16y5 as originally planned.

I'm not huge into speed/power anymore. I'm more into the fuel economy of a vehicle, but not to say I'm NOT tempted to run the turbo

with the proper tune and the right driving technique you can get just as good if not better gas mileage with the turbo.

Ah so you're the one who picked up that wagon

good luck with the pan removal; any plans for the discarded turbo stuff?

Are you guys referring to the oil sump?

Sound like a lot of work just to get it off! :? :(

How do you know about this one? As far as I know it was only posted on a couple local boards.

As far as the discarded turbo goes, debating putting it up for sale or holding on to it for future plans.

I read up on how to remove the oil pan, and if it wasn't leaking I would have just capped it off to save money and time.

Oh well. Probably Thursday or Friday I'll get some pics up of the beast.
  • Wow... Are you serious?! I have to do all that to change my oil pan gasket.. God i hate people, the guy i got my wagon from totaly fed the threads on the drain, and it all ready had a self taper, i had to replace it with a biger american 1 just to change the oil, and it is starting to leak
  • hahaha...
    life sucks...
then you get an oil pan

I saw it on craigslist. there is a site out there that lets you search all of craigslist at once!

OMG this is freaking sucking. I am basically ready to drop the pan except I can't get the flywheel cover thing off all the way. It runs into the 'gear arm thing' from the tranny.

basically i just need to get behind that part and then I'm good, but the thing is not even trying to come off!!

    any tips?

not sure if this will show or not its a link from autozone but you have to be a member so I'm not sure if the diagram will show.

Make sure you have all the bolts out before you try and remove it. The 1st time I tried to take off the transfer case, I struggled, but it turned out that I didn't have all the bolts out.
  • skinnyskinny Senior Wagonist
or you can do the old HMT trick and just JB weld around the fitting.
  • vtecn8ivevtecn8ive Senior Wagonist
got it out!!! I believe I will cut the flywheel cover in half to ease removal in the future.

I was debating jb welding but there was oil seeping out and I knew the jb weld wouldn't hold up with the oil.

either or its out! Now I need to locate a rt4wd or dohc zc oil pan to replace. I am going to hold on to the turbo stuff for a little bit and keep the pan tapped (get it cleaned up though) and turbo it in the future.

Shane, before you install another oil pan use a little percussive maintenance or bring it to a shop and modifiy the oilpan corner thats closest to the transfer case so it will be easier to remove next time.

Turbowagonman did the mod many years back and it worked fine but I cannot find the pic.

Curious as to what you mean modify?

take a hammer to it? I can get a picture of the oil pan if you can point it out
  • skinnyskinny Senior Wagonist
here you go. this is what epic tuning did for the EF hatch RT4wd
  • JakerJaker familEE
But that was purely to clear the transfer case. I don't know for sure if that would permit removal of the oil pan from the engine without also removing the above mentioned items.
  • vtecn8ivevtecn8ive Senior Wagonist
I think either cutting some off on one of the ends, or cutting it in half will make it a hell of a lot easier to remove since that seems to have been my recent problem.
  • skinnyskinny Senior Wagonist
getting the pan of easy = NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

Hate to say it but if you want somethin that you can get the pan off easy get the FWD model. It may be easier to crack the tranny from the block but that sounds like more of a pain then removing the transfer case.
  • vtecn8ivevtecn8ive Senior Wagonist
I'm referring to the flywheel cover on the bottom portion of the tranny case and behind the flywheel and between the oil pan and the tranny.. (maybe a pic is in store :))
  • skinnyskinny Senior Wagonist
maybe. skinny isnt a good at imagining stuff. mainly cause i havnt had to do it
  • here is the helms manual pages for oil pan removal on an RT.
i had to do this just this past weekend cause im having oil pressure issues on my wagon.

i hope this helps, its not too hard, just time consuming.
