RT4WD - $1340 to replace the clutch?
syd
Band Wagon
So I just got my timing belt done and I was informed that soon I'm going to need a clutch. I knew that this might have been the case, but just the same I had been pampering it. So now...I'm making plans.
Local Honda dealer wants $1,340 dollars to replace it. That seems a little steep no? I don't have the time to do it myself. I'm going to shop around but how much SHOULD this cost? Anyone else been in a similar situation?

find a local mechanic and dont pay more then $350.
I say hook up with whoever is offering to help you here and save your cash for when you really need it.
For that kind of money, I would make time. I bought one of those cheap ebay clutch packs and some honda oil for under $100. Made a weekend of it and also replaced the pedal set and cable too. Doing it yourself isn't that bad.
Yeah, the bracket is known to crack.
$340 for the clutch. it should only be $150-$200 for install.
The bracket holds all three pedals. Mine cracked and the pedal was canted to the left just a little and wouldn't fully disengage the clutch when the pedal was pressed. The previous owner kept driving it that way, it started wearing down the clutch set.
I paid like $10 or $15 for a pedal set from a junk yard and put a new cable in when I changed the clutch. The pedals were a pain in the ass too, having to work all up under the dash and all.
The cable was almost $30 so it came up to just under $150 for the whole job and weekend of my time.
Installation, well, yeah, you have to drop the transmission out in order to do that. That's why the CRX has been in pieces in our garage the past few weeks. But I've only had a few days to devote significant chunks of time to working on it. Monday will be another one of those days.
It is a time intensive process, especially if you don't know what you're doing (like me - I've never done a job this big before). But a shop should know what they're doing and have better equipment. NEVER go to a dealer for work on an older car, or any car out of warranty for that matter.
I was thinking it might include a new flywheel or something for that much jack.
Wrench up...
There's so much more you could do with $1340... Hell even if you screwed it up badly you could pay somebody less than that to fix it.
Wow, for that price I hope they throw in some ass lube and a pillow for you to sit on once they are done.
