Input Shaft Play

I was messing around with another HF tranny over the weekend. It came out of a running and driving car (slammed pretty good in the front). The tranny has way too much input shaft play. Is that just a matter of cracking it open and putting in new bearings or should I just avoid the thing all together?

Im pretty sure its a bearing. I know alot of people just say screw it and get a new tranny. If you know how to replace it go for it and save some money

well, the problem is finding an HF tranny in these parts, getting kind of rare.

If you're comfortable inside a transmission, it's about $25 of parts. Bearing and seal. It would take me about 1 hour to change the bearing (once the tranny is out of the car). Bone could probably do it in his sleep, with both arms tied behind his back, using only his fingers (no tools), in about 1.66666667 minutes flat!

Jaker, time for you to do a step by step write up on how too haha. i need to do this, as my tranny bearing is also on the fritz.

I imagine it's pressed into the clutch side case, is it possible to pull that side and leave the rest of it together or do you have to remove the shafts and differential?

Or is it attached to the input shaft itself? Does a guy have to need any special tools to do this?

Sorry boys. I'd love to help, but I just don't have time for a write up.

It's more or less at the very bottom of the tranny case (clutch housing 1/2), and you need to remove everything else to get to it. It's an interference fit into the case, but some carefully applied propane torch heat will expand the case sufficiently for it to just drop out. Then you pry out the seal with a screwdriver and then perform the reverse. Heat the case again and the bearing slides right in.

Well, I might give this a try but first... Need to get the price on the trans down a bit.

He wanted $100 for it so I pulled it out intending to buy it. I discovered the shaft play after getting the damn thing out (front end met with a pole). I'll offer him significantly less and if he takes it I'll give this a try.

imput shaft itself, and not pressed. sometimes tight but with a heat gun it falls right out. sometimes it stays on the shaft, sometimes it stays in the case.
    hope this helps.
