1990 d15b2

Hey whats up guys just acquired a 1990 Wagon from a guy my buddy knows. Well he told me that the Wagovan idles and runs fine when its cold. But when it hits runnin temp it will idle weird and die. He seems to think its compression but wanted to get some opinions before I pull the motor and put in a different block.

Thanks, Rich

    Welcome.

Doesn't sound like a compression problem at all. Check temp. sensors, IACV, o2 sensor...
Any check engine light? Turn the key on and look beneath the carpet in the front passenger footwell. Count the flashes and report back :)
  • Thanks Guru Ill check the mentioned things tomorrow. Ill do so after I get a battery for it finally. I will also try and post some pics up later this car is nice no rust except for under the license plate.

even my rust-free southern cars have all had that same rust spot from the lower left corner of the license plate garnish to the edge of the hatch. No worries.

check the headgasket.. maybe fine until reaching temp then coolant getting into a cylinder causing a misfire or stall.. just a possibility..check the oil for slug or greenish tint.. take off the oil fill cap and smeel inside..
  • Tried to start up the new wagon last night it was definitely a no go. Some sparks shot from the positive side of the battery so i guess im gonna have some electrical gremlins. The spark from the positive makes me think theres a grounding issue somewhere but where to start. This weekend is gonna suck.
  • Alright guys let me know what u think. So i got the wagon started it idles a little high and its smokin. Its like grayish blueish color. It doesnt smell like coolant and it doesnt smell to much like oil. So im thinkin maybe its runnin way to rich. When I give it gas it smokes more, which from what i've seen normally the oil burns and doesnt smoke as much. Also it tends to bog down and sometimes almost dies so I guess i'll check the sensors and what not on the Intake Manifold.
Let me know if you guys got any input.

    Thanks, Rich

    check codes.

    bad o2 sensor= too rich
    bad temp sensor= too rich
    EACV problem= high idle

    check air filter? (too rich...)
  • Well tonight I cleaned the IACV it had some build up on it not to bad though. And the air filter is ok also tomorrow ill check for codes but its not throwin a check engine light. Whats the best way to check the temp sensor and where is it just to make sure? Also how to check the o2 sensor? Will I have to ohm or meter the sensor. And can I unplug the o2 sensor and just let it run in a loop mode???

    Thanks again, Rich

It's possible that the CEL bulb in the cluster is inop- seen it recently in fact.

Hmm, look for a vacuum leak, too. Would cause high idle and rich as well.
  • Thanks Bam-bam ill add those ideas to my list, and run through that stuff when i get off work today. And ill post up after i've done everything.

    Thanks again, Rich.
