Fender mounted mirror?

So I'm looking at my '90 factory repair manual and notice a 'dimensions' pic that shows a passenger side, fender mounted mirror. Is this EDM or JDM standard? I've never seen these in the US or on anyone's ride on this site. WTF?

i have 1 and am able to still get them lmk price isnt cheap
  • Ebay has some generic ones for like 10 bucks. Some guy on another wagon forum was trying to sell them as TRUE JDM mirrors but were just the Ebay knockoffs.

If you get them from JDMshuttle you better believe they will be legit stuff but like he said PRICEY.

I'd ponder such a thing for the Miata. My gf sits so close to the steering wheel, the mirrors are right next to her rather than ahead of her. She can see better by turning her head and looking for herself (especially with the top down - no blind spots!) than trying to use the mirrors!

No problem in the wagon or CRX though. I wonder why they had those.

    its a JDM thing.
    for short Asians perhaps

Staring at that pic some more and I realize the wagon is androgenous (no steering wheel). Maybe this is actually a driver's side mirror?

it's possible the mirror was designed by a narcissist who had no intention of seeing what was behind him, aiming it only at himself.

Large number of Shuttles here have them, both sides and no regular wing mirrors.

Makes them look like a slug even more.

  • I was told that they were like that so you didn't have to take your eyes off the road seeing as how they were more in your direct line of site then off to the side of your vision. This was the explanation I got when I asked my Japanese Uncle while riding in his old rusty corolla.

They put them on the fender to eliminate your blind spot :D

    A little redundant with the side-view still attached...but I like it :D .

So...how pricey is PRICEY? Ballpark figure would work. I'm guessing I can't afford it. I started this topic 'cause I was confused by the factory repair manual, now I'm trying to talk myself out of buying one

the more i look at, the more i like it too. but for the passenger side.
i have UKDM power mirrors right now and the passenger side has to be angled really sharp because it was originally a drivers mirror

My ultimate goal is to get on for each side and take off my original mirrors. Just like the old school look of it.

  • ok....i fianlly found the thread...lol. now my question is
do u have to take off tha fenders to put on these jdm
    style mirrors..im guessin yes.
  • No. If you look at the PICS you will see it sits on the fender/hood line. There is a clamp that holds this to the hood.
  • no the ones im lookin at are not oem. there
are bolts stickin out of the mirror arm.

    Where is Bob BTW...

  • Well as for OEM I can't say but the same mirrors are on Egay for 25 bucks.

You also didn't specify which ones you had. Honestly it is a mirror with one, possibly two bolts, can't be that difficult. Drill your holes, pull the fender liner back and stick your hand up there. Might need a socket with an extension. Worst case you have to spend 10 minutes to pull your fender off but I doubt it.
  • this is the set i was thinkin about installin

  • If you pull your fender liner back you should be able to see all the way up into the fender. I am sure those are going to be a very easy job. Don't know how good they will look as those look like the old Z fender mirrors. I think a square one will look better.
  • i was thinkin about this set before the other
ones i just posted...i like em better.
