88 rt4wd clutch upgrade

hi everyone.

my 88rt4wd clutch is just about to go south. i did some research here and other sites and found that my spline count is 21 and the flywheel is 200mm. 89"s are 200mm/20 count. 90s and up are 212mm/20 count.

i look online (ebay) for a flywheel/clutch kit combo and only found 212mm/21 count (comes with 8lbs flywheel). my question is can i use a 212mm flywheel? will this have some clearance issue/s. has anyone tried this? also the cx flywheel is 15lbs which im looking into in case if 8 lbs is to light. pls i need some input here bro.

    You should be able to use the 89 flywheel with the 88 clutch. Thier overall diameter is very, very close if not exactly the same. I believe the only difference between the 88 and 89 setups is the splinecount on the clutchplates.

    Its been a while since I had all that sitting right in front of me, but Im pretty sure the contact area for the 90-91 and the 88-89 are considerably different. I wouldnt spend the money on that kit unless you can find somone that has used that combo with good results first hand.

    someone posted up that after putting in a after market flywheel they were having clutch problems. I think it was lack of travel as the new flywheel was thinner?
  • It actually turned out fine, I was just trippin cause the car was up on jack stands still and I couldn't remember the feel the pedal had before I pulled the motor out. Lightened flywheels work fine.

    good to know. Isnt lightened for higher reving and heavier ones for putting down more tq?

    As far as my motor, its sluggish at first but once it gets around 3500 and really opens up, its like VTEC(ZC's always had a little VTEC'y-ness to them around 3-4000, if you ever drove a ZC you would get the picture). And no its not a tuning issue, its an issue of the motor not having the torque to get everything going until it gets that lightened flywheel up in the R's. Probably doesn't help me off the line but...... I'm not drag racing a wagon so it don't bother me.

    I remember there is an accord clutch from some 80's model that will mate the 88's spline count to the 90+ flywheels. This was a couple years ago I looked into it and it was dirty cheap for the disk alone. Something like $35... I was messing around with and HF rex tranny for a minute and stumbled into it, I can't remember the year accord but I'm sure some googling will show you and answer.


    EDIT... I googled, it's an '88 Accord LXI that has the '88 civic spline count and 212mm. That's the one that will match the 90+ pressure plate and fancy flywheels to the '88 transmission.

    My SOHC ZC is the same way. it almost sounds like vtec at 3500. I figured it was the milder cam and didnt think anymore of it. So how heavy was the stock clutch?
  • Finding a better clutch for the 88 models would be great!!! With my DOHC ZC my clutch slips when i shift at 6k rpm :( :evil:
  • i just bought a 92 oe flywheel. its 15lbs and i beleive 88rt4wd flywheel are 18 lbs. ( could someone confirm this pls, thanks) i will try to shave some pounds coz after market flywheels are 8lbs. it might to light for a 4wd set up. i know for a fact that 88's are 21 spline count. i look online (ebay) and found stage 2 or 3 kit with 21 spline count / 200mm. im now studying if this will work on the 92 flywheel which is 212mm.

    im still in the drawing board so to speak, so i would appreciate for more info from you my wagon bretheren.

    unless the mounting holes are different i dont see why it wouldnt. I would hope its just a bigger flywheel. As far as i know the pressure plates and clutch disc are all the same size but I could be wrong. If worse comes to worse you could get the 212 flywheel and the matching pressure plate then just buy the 88 clutch disc and make a hybrid set up.

    judebert's thread is very informative but he doesnt use a starter so as far as the total flywheel diameter, it may not be the same. i found on ebay 21 spline/ 212mm with flywheel, so just maybe the 92 flywheel will just work. i just get the 21 spline disc.

  • hola everyone. i replace my clutch with a 6 puck stage 3 clutch and a lightened flywheel. the flywheel was from a d15 and was shaved down to 11sh lbs. it cant be feathered so its a tricky to drive this baby. its either on or off. The downside is that i hear a thug sound from the diff mount. likewise i solidified the front mount with silicon so its kinda solid. the rear mount was stiffened with energy inserts. i can feel the vibration from the engine when the ac is turned on. I might solidify the rear diff mounts with silicon but i dunno if this a good idea. once again your inputs people are welcome.
