New Black HASport Mounts, Linkages, GS-R YS1 tranny, etc.

Well some parts came in, so the next thing is finding the time to do the work.

Following parts are 1993 YS1 GS-R transmission, all new genuine Honda/Acura bearings and seals for it, new HASport anodized black EFB1 mount kit, new HASport shift linkages, and a Skunk2 short shifter. All I lack are the two shifter linkage stabilizer bar poly bushings, and the countershaft and mainshaft 5th gears from a YS1 LS. I'm not going to rob them from my current LS, so I'm either looking for a bad YS1 LS tranny or possibly will end up buying new ones from Acura.

So I will likely have some good condition AZ Race machine mounts (they are like 70A poly - I opted for softer 62A HASports by choice) and a no-grinds YS1 LS tranny for sale soon. The LS tranny has no grinds, but in all honesty I can hear what are the begginings of bearing noise likely from the countershaft top bearings. I could easily have sold it without disclosing the bearing noise because it's pretty much non existant to those who don't know what to listen for, but I'm not a dishonest seller. This isn't so much a classifieds/for sale topic so I'll just discuss that in the dedicated topic when the time comes.

Anywhoo can't wait to drop it all in.

I'll be taking pics of the tranny as it's apart, but it may not be an all-inclusive "how-to" as I have too expensive of a camera to be handling it with greasy hands, and I won't have the time to literally take one thing apart, wash hands, snap pics, repeat 15 times.

:)

I will certainly also give my impressions of the 62A "street" HASport mounts once it's on the road.

  • Sweet setup so far, keep us informed man.
  • Well after doing some research on 5th gears I've come to the conclusion that I'm ordering up a 1994 Integra LS 5th gear set, meaning the 5th gear on the countershaft and the 5th gear on the mainshaft.

    Why?

Well my 1993 GS-R tranny has a crazy short .875 5th gear along with it's already short 4.400FD - this is 100% stock.

On 195/50/15 tires I'd be at 4450rpm in 5th gear at 80mph. 80mph is a pretty steady speed for distance trips, and I'd rather not turn my B18B to such rpm for hours on end.

At first I was going to swap in a 1993 LS 5th gear with it's .742 ratio, which would net me 3750rpm or so at 80mph, but then I checked the 1994 Integra LS and it's even taller .714 ratio and it nets a cool 3600rpm at 80mph.

That's a difference of 850rpm when cruising in 5th gear at 80mph. Doesn't sound like much, but it is if driving for hours at a time.

In the end I'll have a crazy-ass short 1-4 gearset and short 4.400FD for nice acceleration/quarter mile times (not that I really give a damn about that) without sacrificing highway cruising when compared to other B series set-ups. We're not talking HF 5th gearsets with the 2.95FDs or anything, but it's still better than stock B16A/ITR 5th gearsets.

Of course taller tires would also have an impact, but at my ride height 195/50/15 is all I care to stuff in my fenders as I think 205/50/15s would scrub, and I do not like 195/55/15 tires and how they sit on the wheels.

...just thought I'd share some transmission tech with you guys.
  • I had a 93 YS1 trans in my B20 wagon. 5th gear on the highway was pretty interesting, and really did limit my cruising speed, even with a quiet exhaust. Since that car saw 75% surface streets anyway, the highway speeds weren't as much of an issue as I had expected. I wish I had gone with the LS 5th, but all I had at the time were the stock gears. The one nice thing was that I could get into 5th at very low speeds on the street, and with the B20 I had plenty of torque to speed up or pass someone without having to downshift.

Oh and the 62A HASport mounts still made my dash and bumper rattle like crazy. Drove me nuts, just like these Mugen mounts in my RT are driving me nuts now.
  • Ya! Those mounts made the instrument cluster cover and the glove box vibrate. I don't remember hearing the bumper do it though. I had a short blast on the highway everyday on my way to work in the Shagovan (5 miles) and it was fun running it through the gears up to speed (75mph).

You guys should have a look through the shop manual. There's a sequence for torquing the bolts on the motor mounts. Even with OEM mounts, I used to get some vibration if I didn't follow the correct sequence. I'm not saying that you'll eliminate the vibration by doing this, but it certainly will reduce it.
  • I am so envious of your setup B18C, that is essentially the exact motor I would opt for (OBD1 B18B) if I had a 2wd.
Great choice on the motor and fantastic choice with the trans mixture.

You should give us some more shots of everything else just cause, your car looks great!

Honestly I drive maybe 7 miles to work, with no interstate driving...

    BUT!

The car rides very well even at its low ride height, and because it gets good gas mileage I can see how my wife and I would take it on a road trip, in which case I'd like the taller 5th gear. Other than that I can't wait to rip through 1-4 for the first time.

With the AZ Race Machine mounts my car doesn't so much have a lot of vibes at idle like some people complain about, but it has an annoying buzz at 2200rpm or so - happens to be right at 45mph in 5th gear, which is where I get stuck cruising to and from work a lot on the longest 2 lane road I take every day. Sometimes I ride in 4th to keep from being in that buzzing rpm range. With my current shift linkage with wishy washy bushings it even makes the shifter/knob chatter during the buzzing too. It is literally the only thing I can honestly complain about drivability-wise on this car.

After driving Bam's HASported LS swap I was sold on the mounts in the 62A variety. I seriously can't complain about vibrations from the HASports when compared to that damned buzz. I know Bam wants his to be 100% OE stock rubber mount D series smooth and all so he will complain some here, but seriously even as anally picky as I am the vibes were not bad at all IMO.

I have also come to realize that some mounts in some cars vibrate more than others with seriously no explanation. My shop used to do a lot of B swaps into EFs and even when always using the same HASport mounts some cars would have certain rattles/vibes that others simply did not.

Funny you should mention this because my 1991 DX hatch had what I'd consider every bit as annoying chatter/idle vibration at idle with 100% STOCK mounts. none of the mounts were torn, and it had a new front mount, and the core support and everything was all original and not smahed and repaired. We tried relaxing the mounts by loosening the bolts up and retorquing (sp?) them to no avail.

I'll check the service manual, but the thing is you can't really account for the HASports/other mounts because they don't even utilize the front mount so that would probably toss the OE tightening sequence/mount order out the window.

I'll be sure to post some better pics after the mounts and new tranny are in. I'll see if I can find a pic that I haven't already whored out here before...
