New Paint, same old color

Last time I painted my car was probably about 2 years ago. Since then the paint has faded, it’s gotten some chips taken out and someone back into me on Sat night in a restaurant parking lot so I figured it was time to repaint.
I picked up some odorless mineral spirits and a quart of satin black Rustoleum paint. Last time I painted I used a $14 Harbor Freight spray which I tried to use this time but it was clogged, guess I didn’t clean it well enough last time. I had an older DeVibliss gun that I had laying around so I chose to use that one.
Since the car had already been painted with Rustoleum before all I did was give it a good wash before taping it up. After taping off the car I used a Wal-Mart mix bucket to mix the paint about 60% paint and 40% mineral spirits.
First coat of the paint went well but I don’t think the gun was adjusted correctly because I got a few runs but overall the spraying part is pretty easy and went on well. I did about 3 coats but probably should have done 2 more but it was getting late. I did notice the back of the car where it got a little more paint does look a lot better and darker so I might reapply more paint later.
Since the car seems to fade after about a year I did buy some Krylon Satin clear to see if that would help. I did a test spot on the front bumper, let it dry and came back, it was kind of shiny and looked almost like glossy clear. I had some left over paint and just painted over it.

looks good regaurdless...
Don't you think it'd be easier to remove some of the things you so carefully masked off? I thought the handles, lights...etc would be easier removed then masked off. I just primered and then coated a few tiny rust spots on my rear fender in preparation for a Spring time full paint.
Thanks for sharing, looks like you had some agreeable weather!
Thanks, I wanted to keep the satin look because I really like it and plus I'm really bad about washing my car. If it's satin then you can really tell if it's dirty or not and since I use the wagon almost like a truck it's not very clean.
I just used a hole saw I picked up a Lowe's and pressed really hard using a hand drill. I haven't noticed any problems with them balancing since I put them on over a year ago.
I prefer the cheap Rustoleum method because it's cheap, can touch up if I need to, don't need a booth or garage (both of which I don't have) and I can do it outside. I did notice a couple of bugs but they go away eventually. I have tried the single and it didn't turn out very well. I'm pretty inexperienced in painting and I guess the Rustoleum is a lot more forgiving. When I did the single stage it came out pretty bad and almost ruined the car so I haven't wanted to try it again since.
I guess it would have been easier to remove those parts but I was kind of in a hurry and almost had to drive it 30 mins after finishing painting. Removing the tape afterwards was a lot quicker and only took about 10 mins to get it all off.
It was nice, about 60 degrees and sunny
Thanks and I'm so glad they got rid of that "Smiling Faces Beautiful Places" crap.
haha true. i wish it wasnt flat though.. looks cheapo. -i have yet to get my new one.. in May
They look like they're paper but do look better. I got some paint on mine and was using some acetone to remove the paint and was afraid the numbers and letters were going to rub off, I did erase a lot of the 11 on the month sticker and I'm sure I'll get pulled over for that.
Look out for that extra $25 charge in April when they send you your tax bill for the new tag.
I didn't see any flat red on the Rustoleum site, they do have flat white
I forgot about that, where in Savannah is it going to be at.
Mind shooting me a link?
the Visitor Center parking lot will be our meeting point. literally right at the end of I-16
yeah, yeah. I think wagondriver is still coming down from Cola, too.

I might be able to make it, depends on how the wagon is doing, it leaks oil like a MF and haven't figured where it coming from.
Awesome, thanks!
hit up paint specialties. They'll mix you up some cheap ghetto flat red. They'll even match the honda red in a flat.
Really? That simple? Cuz you see, my other car is a Miata, and it would be VERY useful if its wheels would fit on my wagon and my gf's CRX... Also got a line on a cheap set of Miata wheels, though the LAST thing I need right now is yet ANOTHER set of wheels...
