what the hell is that funky smell?

A quick reminder. I'm still pretty new to hondas. I've been driving and working on old air cooled vw's for the last 16 or so years.
Why does the exhaust smell so damn weird from my little wagon. It smells like I'm running some kind of crazy gas additive or something of the sorts.
Every vw engine I ever built, put out exhaust that smelt like burnt gas (or unburnt gas if it wasn't jetted correctly).
Sometimes it's worse than other times?
It was the same in my other wagon (the one I just sold). but the smell was kinda different.
