Aluminium Oxidization

I'm sure most of us in the damper regions of the States have seen the white oxidization that can form on our engines/IM/rims/distr. and such, does anyone know of good ways to get rid of that stuff besides sanding/buffing/polishing? Sorry for no pics

Does WD-40 take care of it or are there different kinds of water displacers that work? Has anyone tried scrubbing with a brillo pad or something?

Reason for this post: All the junkyards around have some bad oxidization going on all of their aluminium parts, maybe its because I'm so close to the ocean. I'm gonna be hitting the parts yards soon and I don't want buy any un-refurbishable goods.

  • There are lots of chemicals that can be used to remove oxidation; I, however, wouldn't recommend any to you because of how porous the aluminum is and how quickly it tends to come back afterwards.

You can either paint it, scuff/sand it or make it really easy on yourself and use a pressure washer with at least 1500psi fairly close and watch it blast it all right off.
  • Thanks, I'm going to try the pressure washing
  • brake parts cleaner! stuff works great, if its real bad take some emory cloth after the cleaner then spray it down agian. to keep it in check yes wd40. i used to work at a marina and thats what we would do to keep the salt water from ruining outboard motors, i do a light spray once a week, it hurts nothing and keeps things fresh!
