Anyone have problems/success with aftermarket clutch cables?

Just asking cuz my mechanic (dad's coworker/friend) apparently snapped an aftermarket clutch cable and is now looking to Honda for an OEM one, which of course can't be found anywhere locally. It's been 3+ months since I've driven my car (with 1.5 months being at my mechanic's shop) and I'm kinda getting annoyed now.

If anyone has used aftermarket clutch cables in their builds/rebuilds, is there any one that is better than another one?

  • I'm sure that any clutch cable from 88-91 civics will work. Have any salvage yards around?

ya, there are but with about a foot of snow on top of all the cars. I'll check on hondaautomotiveparts.com and compare part numbers. Thanks for the quick reply.
  • I got one from NAPA once that was just about an inch short. Ended up just putting the old one back on when I changed the clutch.

I would have him use the old one but when I was adjusting the cable so I could drive the car home way back when, I broke the plastic threaded piece where you can adjust the cable tension.

Hmmmm, I wonder if you could just switch the threaded pieces and the knob...

I would try it, I don't remember how or if it comes off but I would look into it.
  • i would just find one in the junk yard if your going the fix and swap parts from cable to cable. if i remember right the ends are crimped on so in the end if you find a way isnt the cable going to be shorter do to cutting and mending? ive only bought aftermarket cable's from advance auto parts. i never had an issue with them, always the same length, and seemed the same quality. this also goes with the speedo cables from there as well, no problems at all.
  • Another question just came to me...

Is there a difference between a clutch cable from a crx/civic si with a 5 speed d16a6 and one from an rt4wd with its' 6 speed manual?

And if an aftermarket cable from Advance Auto has been holding up, I may just go that route. My mech's just worried about an aftermarket one snapping again.

How are you snapping these cables??? I've ran some pretty tough pressure plates and literally stomped the bejeezus out of my clutch pedal but never had this problem (I know it happens). How did your mech. snap a brand new doing a clutch job? Something doesn't add up for me here.

I spoke with him last night as opposed to having my middleman dad ask his friend questions. He told me the cable snapped on him as he was taking it out on a test drive. He had to have my wagon towed back to his shop. He didn't tell me what aftermarket cable it was but he didn't like the fact that it snapped. He ordered an OEM one from Honda but they told him there were none in the States and had to order it straight from Japan, hence the long wait. Finally something JDM yo!!! LOL!

Anyhoo, the cable is supposed to arrive Thursday and if all goes as planned I should have my wagon back by Friday/Saturday.

Funny story... My wagon has been sitting in his shop along with the other cars/trucks he and his brother are fixing or doing custom interior/exterior fab work for, a lot of people have been asking if it's for sale cuz they wanted to buy it. Also, he told me he and his bro are customizing a suburban with 30 monitors. Crazy stuff. Maybe I'll grab dome pics when I pick up my wagon.

Keep your fingers crossed for the wagon and me reunification! It'll be a tear-filled yet joyous occasion!
  • Thanks for the heads up on that cable evol911. Hopefully I won't need to order it. I hope to hear from my mechanic later on today! Again, fingers crossed!
  • F'ing part never arrived! This is bull crap! I'm gonna head on down to the salvage yard with my dad and see if I can find one from another Civic/CRX. Are they fairly easy to remove? If not, then I'm gonna go with Advance Auto and get one of there aftermarket ones... Beck/Arnley seems to be the better brand from them.

Maybe I'll find some other stuff for the wagon while I'm there.
  • I ended up getting 2 clutch cables from the salvage yard on Saturday. I'm hoping at least one of these will work. We'll see Tuesday night. Also got some other pieces that I'll post up in the wagon love thread.
