how fast can you go?

this post is for the theory of top speed, some people are never happy about how fast their top speed is.
keep in mind if you dyno a car there is no wind resistance so results differ on the roadway. and dont go and kill yourself trying  you can however go to a sanctioned race track or flats to test your combo.

here is a good site on theoretical b-series combo's

http://bensebuilt.livejournal.com/2006/01/08/

there is also a good ratio calculator

good luck stay safe have fun. 8)

and i dont want to here it man were here to make knowlage happen not tear new asshole's :?

I played with those calculators when i had the HF in my waggy...said I would be doing like 186 at redline in 5th

    Topics like this promote 'e-mechanics'

How much hp will I get with intake and underdrive pulleys? LOL

My car is capable of 700hp!! (all I need is a massive turbo, build, tuning, etc)

    blah blah blah

talk about speed.. this is in my '79 wagon.. ZC with close ratio 5spd...

  • Still yet to find my limit  I've had the speedo pointing straight down though

    With the hood up? lol

We did 142 in my 00 Si back in 01. It was far from stock and maxed out. Honestly regret being that stupid...
  • I remember one of the first CRX Si's I had, speedo went to 120, I must've been going close to 130. Even with all the suspension work I had done and the tires, once that car got over 120mph it started to "float". If you ever been that fast in a car that is not designed to go that fast you know what I mean. When I hear stories of Honda's hitting over lets say 150mph, I think BULLSHIT!! No solid body aerodynamics, no smooth underpans or diffusers and such, it really is a deathtrap. Honda's were not meant to hit speeds like this without some serious body modification. Now granted the NSX hits high speeds with less power because of its ingenious body design, but a Civic, you are seriously asking for it. I wouldn't know how to figure this out but I would say a run-of-the-mill tuned Honda hitting speeds over 120mph(maybe even lower than that) is losing serious amounts of grip and traction, minor corrections at that speed could be fatal and most of the time are to novice and pro drivers.

Honda's are not top speed cars! <--- my point!
  • yes and whats even more scary over the year of ff drag strip, since 93' i watched the magazine racers dave shih, tony fuchs, lisa kubo, to stephen papadakis go from high 12's and just over a hundred to mid 8's and 180+ mph!! and huh just 1320 feet  thats got to be a damn crazy ride! i never once heard anyone say what the 0-60mph was in any of those ride's

Yeah, this discussion's kinda pointless really... You'll be held back by drag or a limiter long before you reach redline in top gear. It's like judging how fast you can go by how fast your speedometer reads. I've maxed out a car with a 120mph speedo at 105, and I pin the needle on my bike with a speedo that goes to 85mph WAY before it runs out of steam...
  • Yeah I agree that this is pretty pointless. I am over here in Germany and most of the cars here are limited to 250kmh. So I guess I have been to 250kmh

In the many bikes I've owned, bike speedos usually read much higher than actual speed. A GPS is the true test. Honestly when cranking a bike up to real speeds, it's very hard to look away from the road and even look at the speedo... I've done about 170 on a bike before, GSXR 1100 with a 1260 big bore kit. I'm sure somebody will call it BS but I'll say this, it still had more in it to give.

It's kind of funny, the last ticket I got was on my Harley Davidson going 60 mph...

I have no Idea, it was off the clock thats all I know.
From factory they are limited to 220kms but who knows how accurate that is, it was only doing 7500-8000rpm I think, so another 1000rpm at least left in it.

Was on the way back from taupo in the back roads so figured I would give it a go and get it out of my system.
Been there, done that, never again :D

In most CARS I've owned, the speedo reads higher than actual. I'm currently running 185/75/14 snow tires rather than the stock 175/70/14s (they were free on Craigslist ). According to the Miata.net tire calculator, my speedo should read 5.4% too slow, and when my speedo reads 60mph I'm actually going 63.2. But then I checked my speed on my GPS, and the car's speedo is now reading exactly right! Which means it's about 5% too fast on stock size tires.

I got my old Integra up to 130 a few times, 133 being the top (was told it would not exceed 135). It was a LS with boltons at the time. It was stable mable. Didnt feel floaty at all, but it was lowered 5" too.

Ive had both wagons just over 100, but I really dont spend much time over 85-90mph these days. Just not worth it.
  • this is the USA, and for us many of us are into how fast you can go. as far as being pointless thats just to the eye of the beholder. i just love how a thred is jacked just to say its a pointless topic. hondas were never ment to go down the dragstrip, never ment for top speed, never ment for alot of things, huh including drift! but they do it and do it well. and yes falkin sponsored a ef hatch few years back equiped with a jdm driver and he was good too. it doesnt have to be an FR to drift, drifting is just a byproduct of loss of control and keeping it in check, but thats a whole different topic. here in the USA we have a few top speed civics :D

this one is a great article and this must be my favorite quote from it
some 75-year-old guy with a flathead in a roadster - and he'll say 'this is great. I've got one of these cars in my driveway at home. Can I see the motor?' They just can't believe how strong they are.
Then they realize that they've got a 300 cubic inch flathead doing 140 [mph] and I've got a 90 cubic inch Honda doing 160. And they love it.

My wagon was NEVER intended to be an autocrosser - even by me, until I had nothing else to drive - but it sure turned some heads!

I actually had a similar experience at the GRM $2004 Challenge. I was a builder and the designated autocross driver of the first (and I think only, so far) Saturn ever entered. There were lots of guys with some WILD setups - a RWD Corvette powered CRX, for example. But the Saturn got a lot of attention because everyone, it seemed, had one at home, or their daughter had one, or something, and they absolutely loved seeing it out there - especially when it did relatively well. :)

But anyway, we're topic drifting a bit, but yeah, what you say is true. If the Civic was only ever used as a cheap economy car the way it's meant to be, there'd be about as many performance enthusiasts for it as the Buick Roadmaster has.

I had my wagon up to 106 (GPS) yesterday, but ran out of real estate/chickened out. I don't even want to know how much a ticket for 40+ miles over the limit would be. I've had it past 100 several times, a few in 4th gear, and it's rock solid.

the other day, i was in a school zone......i had the pedal down hard....i was easily doin 20 mph. then the road went downhill and i almost hit 30 mph.....glad i didnt get a ticket!

but if i park my wagon and get into an SR-71 blackbird i can go mach 3.2!

Tbh Ive never had a limited car so not sure, my old type r definatly did around the 240ish mark. Not entirely sure what my ef9 does cos I know the speedo isn't acurite judging by my trap speeds at meremere :\

The type r still feels pretty good at those speeds. The ef not so much..Frank gets alot faster when you hit around the 190km mark  I really need to upgrade the suspention
