Noob with DOHC ZC ECU questions

ok guys, i need some help. for those that may not know, about an year ago i bought superhatch's 91 DX with a D16A8 engine and according to him a Integra LS ECU (PR4). i've been reading on the net about the PM7 ecu and i was wondering if the PM7 is worth getting over what i have now. the PM7 seem to sell anywhere around $50-90. would an ecu from an auto also work/be good? if the PM7 is worth it would any of these work or not work?

i'm a big noob when it comes to hondas so please dont flame me to much. i'm trying to learn...

  • If the car is fine why switch ECU's. Those ecu's are for DOHC ZC's, and yes manual for manual, auto for auto. The last ebay listing, the ecu has the sensor on it DO NOT GET THIS... only for European applications. If you have a DOHC ZC then get a PM7 ECU. Best to stya with the ECu that goes with the motor.

    thanks for the info!

well, i was thinking that getting an ecu like the second link may get me more power(preference #1) or maybe the same power but better mpg or some such worthy reason to spend $60 or so. also the second listing is not that far from me...
  • If you've got a DOHC ZC and are running a PR4 (B18A LS Integra ECU) then it's *possible* that the engine could be running rich, which could lower mpg.

Does the car pass an exhaust sniffer-type emissions test? Do you have this sort of testing in your area? If it passes then chances are it's not running rich enough to hurt mpg, or else the emissions readings would be in the failing areas.

If it's mpg you seek then yes a PG7 or even a 88-91 PM6 Si/EX ECU might help in that area, but don't expect any power gains.

IF the engine is currently running rich then that can actually hurt hp and mpg, so a switch of ECUs might actually help both believe it or not. It will all hinge upon how well the engine runs now, and if it's running rish or not.

If it's not running rich then the ECU switch could actrually hurt hp and emissions by running the engine too lean. This may help mpg, but overall in the long run be harmful to the engine as over time running an engine too lean can end up burning a valve or detonating enough to pitt the piston tops, damage the rings, etc. etc.

well, i've had it for almost a year now and i havent been to emissions yet.

i guess i can check the spark plugs and o2 sensor to see if i'm running rich. is there any other way i can check without getting an afr gauge? maybe i'll have to get one but i'm trying to spend as little as possible...

Actually I've had a few customers with DOHC ZC engines pass GA emissions with simply a PM6 D16A6 ECU and some fine tuning of the ignition timing. I'm not saying one adjustment and it's done - sometimes it takes advancing; sometimes it takes retarding.

^ when I had my sedan I passed emissions with my black top and 10.5:1 compression on a stock pm6 ecu. I didn't go more than a block before pulling over and swapping out my chipped ecu though.
  • I can supply the OEM ECU for the ZC DOHC, we call it the D16A8/9 here. With the adjustment pot or optional for the O2 sensor.
Pot ECU has a better map 8)

I didnt know a DOHC ZC was stamped A8. Any ZC I have ever seen is stamped ZC. If someone bitches enough I will post a pic of my OBD0 SOHC ZC stamp

FYI: A solid tune will net you the best mix of power and gas mileage.

And here in Germany it is stamped D16Z5, and the D16a6 is stamped d16z2
