replacing clutch in my 91 rt4wd

Ok, so i 've been without my wagon for almost 2 months now. When it broke down, I was not able to get into any gear while the engine was on. Tried adjusting the clutch cable and that temporarily worked until the plastic threaded part broke. So I've been told it could be a throwout bearing, broken spring(s), etc.

My question is what is the average cost to replace a clutch? I can't do it myself so I'm looking to have a local shop that deals with mostly hondas (I've seen multiple crxs in his parking lot) do it for me. Thanks guys. I just need to know on average what it would cost, I know this guy won't screw with me as he's a good friend and he has also worked on my wife's van. Thanks again!

I'd much rather do most repairs myself (with some help of course) but seeing as it's winter and I can't even fit my car into my garage cuz of all the boxes and crap in there, I'll let someone else deal with it. My dad has a buddy who can do it for cheap, but he's been putting it off for the last month and I'm tired of waiting.

I'm hoping it isn't too damn expensive. My son's baptism is in a couple of weeks.

a good deal would be under $500 with parts and labor. check your local forums for someone that can do it for cheap and buy the parts yourself. it could save you some cash.

if you have a shop do it, look to spend around $700 to $1000. I picked up the parts and used a friends garage to do the job. Took about 2 - 2:30 hours to do the job but I only have a 2wd wagon.
  • Before you spend money on changing the clutch, have a look under the dash to see if the clutch pedal pivot/bracket is busted. These have been known to fail (mine did) and they're getting hard to find now that the Wagon has been out of production for so long.

I can't link to threads for some reason. They don't come up in the address bar.
  • ^^^^ Jaker, when you are on the thread you are looking for, right click then go down to properties and click and it will give you the address for the page you are looking at
  • So I talked to my friend's mechanic and he said a clutch job on a 2wd honda would run about $550 and since mine is a rt4wd it would prolly be closer to $650 or so. My dad said to just buy another car.

Now it turns out my dad's friend is going to pick up my car friday after work and he says it'll be ready to pick up on sunday/monday. Can I get a woohoo?!!
  • NICE :!: :!: :!:

  • hmm... that photo looks familiar.

Check the bracket! Mine was real hard to put in gear because the cluth was partially engaged. Sometimes at a stoplight I wouldn't be able to get it into first unless I turned the car off and restarted it when it was in gear.

Alright Jaker. I will check the pedal assembly tomorrow or Thursday before it gets picked up. Now in your picture what am I looking for? I was sitting in my car today after work, reminiscing about how it feels to drive a manual and I was depressing the clutch pedal. It would feel normal for about the first 1/4 then would get harder. This is probably because I overtightened the clutch cable with the adjustment knob to the point of snapping the plastic threaded thing.

Another symptom I had was a whining noise when stepping on the clutch pedal and it would feel like the clutch was never fully engaged even if the pedal was to the floor.
  • About half way down the picture you see a horizontal bar. To the left of it you see the framework torn and cracked. Basically the fulcrum for the pedal moves back and forth.
  • So is it fixed yet?

I came home Saturday night and it had been picked up and hopefully worked on yesterday. I'm going to find out today what the status is. I'm damn excited to drive it again...it's been too long!!!!!

And my pedal assembly was fine btw.
