RT4wd U joints (searched)

I had an issue with my 4wd wagon and thought Id share the experience with the members here. So about a year ago when I had the car on a lift I noticed the rear mount for the diff looked pretty worn, I figured Id address it at a later date. BIIIG MISTAKE basically the mount ended up going to *#it on me. I did not know this but did notice a vibratin coming from the rear, but the car is not my daily so It never really got to me to check it out because it was minor.

Well the minor vibration got unmistakably major about 2 weeks ago when I was out and about. I ended up being able to get the car home but the noise just got worse and worse.

Got the car home took me about 2 days to get around to checking it out. I saw not only was the rear mount shot but the bracket that holds it was broken as well. So I get new parts together and go to install them when I noticed the u joints on my driveshaft (propeller shaft)were toast! To the point they were about to seperate.

So at this point im stressing because I know how expensive they are from the stealer...but opted to call a local hot rod shop I do a lot of business with. I asked him if he could take care of the u joints he said yeah no prob. I was relieved, dropped the driveshaft off and went about my day. Shortly after that I get a phonecall from him telling me he couldnt do it but he has a guy crosstown that can. So im like aiight cool.

I take the driveshaft to the guy crosstown whos a specialist and after about 10 mins he informs me he can do nothing for me. So I basically need a propellor shaft which honda doesnt sell seprately if i am looking at the parts breakdown properly. Keep in mind im not posting this for pity or for somebody to "hook me up". I am merely posting this because in hinesite I should've replaced the mount to begin with. And now knowing theres various rubber bushings too, and how expensive the drivetrain parts are, I would have replaced everything from day 1.

So heres a list of the bushings i will be buying along with a propellor shaft which is about $1,000.00 =-(

40300-SH9-000 propellor shaft assembly
50711-SH9-020 (you will need 2)
50721-SH9-010 diff mount (you will need 1)
50716-SH9-020 diff dampner (you will need 1)
50726-SH9-020 Dampner bracket

So hopefully me sharing my experience helps someone out there not make the same mistake, even if its not broke fix it or it might get expensive.

Ill be posting pics of all above mentioned broken parts. And may do a writeup if u guys want.
Sorry for the long post. Just felt I needed to share this.

update: should have a driveshaft here by weeks end...writeup with pics to follow shortly
  • Are they actually shipped? I only ask because I tried to find some earlier this year and they were no longer in production and available. It seemed that others had found that there were none available as well. It would be awesome if they were available again...

im not sure if the driveshaft is still in production. I happened to luck up on one through a friend as I was bitching about my problem. But the good news is that it has a valid part number and a price with the dealer so im pretty sure they still make it. I happened to search for other parts mudflaps, cargo cover, etc...and they told me immediately the parts werent available anymore. But...ill check just so we know for sure.

so theres more than just that main mount that causes the vibration?
  • SamaoSamao Band Wagon
Thats what I was trying to figure out, simply trying to skimp due to the price, (looking for the cheapest way to save my drivetrain lol)
  • GeNXGeNX Wagonist
did any pics get posted??? could you please

I am about to do the busings but cant find any more procedures than just removing and installing the rear differential..
  • saveacivicsaveacivic New Wagonist
is this all being compiled in a master sticky?
good info to have when we get these issues...
  • GeNXGeNX Wagonist
Again I would like some info on how to replace the rear bushings. Are they pressed in? Do we have to drain and drop the rear differential all the way out?

Update-- feels like I could hear crickets in the background out here. Well I'm going for it tomorrow so here it goes
  • Thanks for the info, I'm about to check mine out.
  • sorry to hear, do a write up of your install for sure this could help others to happen to do the same thing
