RT 4WD Auto Trans ECU Question

Does the D16A6 4WD automatic run a PM6? Or is it a PS9 like the EX sedan automatic?

I'm sure somebody has one, if they can take a peek that would be great.

  • It is my understanding that the ECM(engine control module) is the same as the manual trans version and a seperate TCM(transmission control module) is utilized to operate the automatic trans

i would assume its the same as an A/T EX sedan...

    It's a pm6, there's no separate tcu
  • Hmm.. A PM6, It must be a little different from the manual PM6 because they would need the auto lockup.

Anyone know how to tell the difference between an auto and manual PM6?

Not sure specifically about the PM6 itself, but with the PM7, as a general rule (but not always) if theres four alpha-numeric characters after the PM7 part, then its manual and if there's three alpha-numeric characters then it's auto.
  • I have three of them at the moment but haven't really looked at the numbers. I know two are manuals because I took them out of the cars and the third is one I picked up on craigslist.

What I'm really looking to do is the single wire vtec (have a Y8 head sitting around too) and still keep my A/C. I know it's possible to do that with a PS9 but they're not the easiest to find and a little beyond the price of the PM6.

Ideally what I would like to end up with is an A6/Y8 mini running OBD0 with two separate fuelmaps set up to switch between pump gas and E85. Although the easy and cheap OBD0 MPFI D16Y7 is looking better every day. The price I can get that motor for is less than the tuning tools I would have to use for a mini-me.

It took me a little while but i found the pic that proves there is a seperate transmission control unit on the 4WD wagons
located under the drivers (left) seat
this is right out of the 90-91 civic wagon electrical troubleshooting manual

Now with that said the part numbers for the automatic and the manual trans4WD wagons ECUs are NOT the same as each other nor are they the same as the CRX Si or the Civic Si...also not the same as the manual trans Civic 4dr EX ECU but all of those are PM6 middle numbers. maybe the same programming or maybe close enough not to matter much.
Of course California emission car ECUs are different from others.

If you want, I can post the exact catalog part numbers for each.

so thats what that is.... hmmm Hope that 'lil turd doesn't give me issues with my auto-manual conversion.

FWIW, it's not in the 2wd auto.

must have something to do with the low and s-low lock buttons
  • I went through my stash of PM6 ECUs. Two that I have are PM6 A09 and they're 90-91 CRX 5 speeds. The mystery one if I remember right was a PM6 A080 that I thought might be an automatic but it turned out to be pointless because it's an 88-89 model that can't easily be socketed and chipped.

So it looks as if I would have to find a PS9, give up A/C, or rig up and RPM switch. I think the best way to go would be picking up a good used D16Y7 and get the E85 tuning right. Then later finding the PS9 and building a good A6/Y8 mini-me and tuning it a second time.

I'm going to have to do something soon, I've noticed the D15 starting to smoke a little until it warms up to temp.

    Help me help you....
specifically what is it you are wanting to accomplish?
what do you have now and what do you want to convert to?
    keeping a/c?
    is it automatic trans?
    is boost is the future?
  • No boost in the future. It's a daily driver and keeping the /AC, also keeping it OBD0. It's currently a 1.5 manual. The plan is to have a good daily that run on pump gas or E85. I would like to do this mostly in the ECU without adding any rpm switches add on controls (less is more, less to go wrong and less to lose).

And having about 130-150 ponies under the hood would be nice too.

Well, I have a Y8 head and was going to put it on an A6 block. I have the head and I know a guy with a block for next to nothing but I would have to have it freshened up a little. It' one of the better mini-me combos. I was planning on keeping it OBD0 and running a moates two-timer. One prom for pump gas and one for E85. With it being OBD0 I was thinking about using the output for the auto tranny converter lock-up for vtec activation, I know some people use the A/C for this but I like A/C and plan to keep it. The auto tranny lock up is something that's found in the PS9 but not the standard PM6. I was thinking the ECU for the auto RT model might be able to do this as well.

Not looking boost or anything, I know boost guys love E85 and all but my thought is keeping my fuel money local instead of going to parts of the world that well.... You get the idea, keep it local. Anyhow I think I might just go pick up a Y7 and put the mini-me on hold for a while. I can pick up a good Y7 diry cheap and run it on a PM6 for a while. The two timer should still let me run E85 with some tuning, hopefully without changing the pressure regulator or injectors and only changing the injector duty cycle.

    this blue box was though...

  • I would bet a buck it's for the seatbelts or something. Just a guess.

no because only the A/T models i've seen at the yard had it. mine doesnt (and i have auto belts)
  • I know in my 91 lx 4dr the seatbelt box was under the dash in the middle of the console behind the radio.

thats where mine is also

the blue box is for the A/T shifter interlock....it keeps you from shifting from park without the foot on the brake and keeps you from removing the key from the ignition if the shifter isn't in park....any other questions?
  • Good answer I just lost a buck...
