wants to know how much they weigh (which I think is in the earlier pages of this thread) and price is also. 11 lbs. and 600$ is last i remember
Yeah that's the price they are going for. Jaker's hood weighed in @ 9.9 pounds because it's all raced out with a foam core and other things he requested. This version of the hood is more robust for street use and does not have a foam core. It's 16 lbs.
I'm really impressed with the strength and rigidness of this hood, this carbon hood is so strong that is doesn't even deflect when it's lifted/opened by only one corner. I like making incredibly strong composite parts that maintain a lightweight structure. The true advantage to composites is their incredible strength-to-weight ratio. Proper engineering of fiber orientation, resin selection, and processing technique are crucial to making a successful part.
what all do you need to make other cf parts, just the oem pieces to make a mould of?
Yep. I can make any part in carbon fiber for your car that you'd like. I would need an original part so I could make a mold for the carbon fiber. The only consideration is that the original part is usually not usable after being used for a mold pattern.
If you have something cool that other people would buy too, I would discount your carbon piece. PM me for specific dtails.
very cool.
good luck cmerce with everything.
i love that a wagon hood has been the first part made by cmerce.
usually the EF/ED is last on the list to get parts.

Thanks, I've also thought how unusual it is for me to start off by making hoods for the wagovan. Every time I pass a wago on the road I think of how cool a carbon hood would look on them because of the extreme rake (angle) of the hood.
how much do you think it would take to start making the hatches?
i might be game for that possibly this summer.
I'm not sure how much they'd go for. I would need to take a close look at a stock hatch and figure out how to make it. The hardest part would be accommodating the glass. I'm pretty busy with hoods right now and I'm still waiting for some spare time so I can make eg parts for my car.
I've been talking to some people on hcw about making carbon window visors so that's what I have next on my list for wago parts.
Sorry I missed you at the meet! Thanks for the invite. I'll make it out next time, hopefully with a hood to show off.
Hi cmerce, been following your hood thread for awhile. What's the status of hoods? I'm most likely in the market for one at the end of this month or next month. I'm also wondering how safe this hood is without hoodpins? I have a Mitsubishi Evo and am familiar with the possible failings of the latch/hook due to too much opening and closing of the hood. Would hood pins be in my future once I go down the path of getting a CF hood?
cmerce, if you're getting enough interest in the hatch, I have an extra hatch, without glass in Puyallup. If someone is seriously interested, they could buy the hatch from me and we could just meet up and it would save on a ton of shipping. I'm not interested in a hatch really, but just offering to help out since I'm local

I'm very glad you asked. On the next hood build I was planning on taking detailed pictures of how I do the hinge and latch threaded inserts. What I have done on the previous hoods is something a mass manufacturer would never do. I reinforce the hood frame with a lot of carbon fiber where the threaded inserts are embedded. The threaded inserts are surrounded in a sandwich of carbon fiber making them incredibly strong.
I am Highly interested in a hood and hatch for the wagon. My only dilemma is that this June I deploy to Afghanistan for a year. I think it would also be sweet to have a cf lip for the bumper, but that is a little more complicated. I definitely would like to start talking about this, send me a pm and we can further discuss this.

BUMP for a killer looking hood! This should get a sticky!
Did you mean "wait" or how heavy the hoods are?

x2.
Hells yeah. Washington style AWD to the top of Stevens Pass!!

ill give this a thought might look good
will this look good on grey wagon?
cant really picture it

Maybe sometime down the road. The molds are expensive to make and I don't know anyone willing to commission the project.
