Composite hoods for Wagons

I'm going ahead and getting a mould made for a hood for my car. My only concern is how to make the bottom side of the mould. I have no need for the hood latch for my application. I will be going ahead with the hinge mounts though. If there are enough of you interested in the OEM configuration for the hood, I will go that route.

Is anyone 100% committed to a CF hood made by a professional firm for $500 plus shipping? Chances are shipping will be in the $100-$175 range depending on your location. Shipping will be from Blaine, Wa 98230. I can meet up with some of you in the Vancouver BC to Seattle corridor, but that's a far as I can go.

This is still in the very early stages, and none of these numbers are finalised.

Let me know what you guys think. This is not a "if I get 10 people, I'll go ahead and have the mould made" situation. I am having the mould made no matter what. The only issue here is what configuration the mould takes, based on the need to satisfy other interested parties.

  • I don't have the money but really like the idea. Would be cool to see a CF hood with the ZC bump.

  • I've sent photos and measurements to the composite shop that will be doing the work. I'm waiting to hear what the mould will cost, and then what final products will cost, based on the material they are made from (CF or fiberglass).

I figured it was time for an update on this. The original shop that I was talking to about making this for me turned out to be a waste of time. They were telling me they would supply a hood that would weigh somewhere around 25-30 lbs. What's the point?

Then I came across a guy that is in college for composites, and apprenticing in the Boeing composite labs down in Seattle. He was quite keen on working with me to build a hood. It seems that there will be some pretty advanced technology going into this hood. It's vacuum infused with a foam core, and we're shooting for between 8 and 10 lbs. Once the 1st hood is done and tested, he's planning on making more. I have no idea what he'll be charging.

Here's a pic of the mould for the skin:

Here's the skin out of the mould:

I thought I wanted dry carbon (the way it looks in the pics), but the maker convinced me to put clearcoat on it to protect the carbon and resin from UV. Once it's all together, a nice coat of high end UV clearcoat is going on it.

    I can't wait!

That hood should be very rigid once he has finished with it! I wish I had the drive to make the molds for stuff like this...

That is so sick. Once its finish get pics & a price! I might be down.

Very cool indeed! Now if he can make a mold for the hatch...
  • JakerJaker familEE
I'm certain he could probably make the hatch as well, but I'm not commissioning that project, as I cannot use a carbon hatch for the class I race in. However, I will be getting him to make a carbon/kevlar front splitter as well as some front fenders with my flares integrated into them.

we can make him a very rich man if he wanted to make more.

    Simply

    BAD A$$ ! ! !

Looks like the hood will be done in about 1 week. Here's a shot of the frame. He just needs to bond in the metal inserts for the hinges and hood latch, attach the frame to the skin, and clearcoat the hood.

    Almost done!

I might have to get one of these??? When will he have more ready???
  • MrM3MrM3 Council Member
Is he interested in doing more and if so does he have a price in mind? I'd buy one immediately if he is.
  • ThaClutcHThaClutcH Senior Wagonist
Im sure we all have the same question.
  • JakerJaker familEE
His original plan was certainly to make more than 1 hood. The moulds were made to easily pop out multiple hoods. Now that it's almost finished, I need to confirm with him his future intentions, but I'm 99.9% sure he'll be making more.

I'll probably never be able to afford one, but damn that's nice lookin!

How would the hardware attach to it?

Then it just bolts in like normal.

So I've been talking to cmerce (his screen name on Honda-Tech) and he definitely wants to make more hoods. He says from 1-2 weeks to build one and if a couple of you get together to buy there would be a small savings as he could buy materials in greater quantities.

I'm going to link him to this thread so he can come in and give you guys the numbers.
