Transmission LEAK... Need Help

Well, I got my tranny in my 88 4WD but it leaks from what I can see, the
right side axle where it connects to the tranny.

I thought it was the Out put shaft seal (Axle Seal). So I replaced that but
it still leaks. I hope that it is not going to be the tranny or expensive
because I just put this tranny in.

Can anybody help!!!!!!! Let me know.

  • did you use a seal driver? those seals are fragile, also the spring inside can fall off. they can be a pain in the ass. if it may not be coming from there get a few cans of brake cleaner and spray the whole trans down this will leave it real dry so you can see exactly where it is coming from. 8)
  • I used the old seal to push in the new. I was looking around today and it may be a loose bolt, don't know yet.

I'll check it again tomorrow and post an update with pics.
  • humm, not the best way to do it sometimes you get it that way but it does bend, it is only sheet metal with some rubber around it, when i dont have the shops tools to work with, for the small seals ill use a round wood pole from the hardware store i made into this type of tool, i acually have a few diffrent sizes it must go side to side of the seal. plus i like to stick the seal in the freazer to get it real cold and before i drive it i'll take my heat gun and just warm the case a little not to much you dont want to warp anything just do it evenly then drive it in, well i lube it with some 10w/30 the thinner the oil the better it goes right in never leaks. kinda cool at work we sell nitrous refills so i just hit it with that dont even have to heat it up it slides right in but i should get a bottle for home use just for this. maybie you know someone with one. hope this helps out.

    PS,
could be worse ya know, could be a rear main that you just replaced and that one is now a leaker
  • Yeah, I hope it is not the seal that's leaking. I'm going to make sure tomorrow for sure. I'll spray it down with carb cleaner. Then drive it and see whats up.

Thanks for all the info. I didn't even think about all those things to make a seal go in easier. Good info.

I'll make sure I'll use those ideas for the future.
  • Well, I checked it out and it was a missing screw on the shifter box.
    Here's a pic:

This is the spare that was on my old tranny that I took the screw from.

Here is the screw, spring, and ball that was missing from tranny I got from the junk yard.

Well, I finally got it fixed and having fun driving the car.

    Thanks for the help/ideas guys.
  • thats great man, :) bet it felt strange shifting without that part.? thankfully an easy fix for you, now its fun time again :D 8)
  • Man, now my throw out bearing is out. This thing just continues to run into problems. AHHHH

I was driving to work and when I went to step on the clutch and I hear a
Click then the freakin clutch just went limp. Yeah......

So I pull into the middle lane and pop the hood and tug on the clutch fork
and it is just loose, I could lift it up and down with no pressure.

I'm hoping it's just the TOB...

If anyone gots any idea that would be great.

In the mean time I will be pulling the thing apart for the second time.
  • sorry to hear this man  i had this problem just last year in my crx, it was actully the spring that holds the bearing inside on the slider bar. its a honda only part and expect to wait a few days to get one. but also could be the bolt in the slide arm did you remember to tighten it? i always throw some locktight on that one.
  • I will have to x2 on what luckyskywalker said. I had mine do the same thing.
  • Damn, I will be pulling the tranny tomorrow. I still have the old tranny so
hopefully I can just swap it over.

Do you guys know why this happens?

Just curious, because I put in the new TO bearing and had a hard time puting the spring on the TO bearing but finally got it on. Hmmmmm....
  • well your ride is 17-20 years old so are the parts. if it was the spring they lose their resilience after time it gets compressed over and over for years, plus the ends where mine snaped hold kinda sharp ended holes in the bearing. i wouldnt reuse an old one but thats just me  buy a new one, seems after 17 years this is going to start happening alot soon...
  • Well, I pulled the tranny off on Wed and found out that it was the freakin
pressure plate I got off of ebay. The fins where the TO bearing pushes
were stuck down not engaging the clutch. So I threw that out and put in a
pressure plate that was lying around.

One side of the TO bearing spring was broken too so I switched it with one that was lying around.

All this took me like 4 hours to take the tranny out and back in, mann.....

Well, I'll be putting in a performance clutch later when I get some more
    cash.

I know I put in used parts but a running wagon is better than a dead wagon right!!!!!!!
