obd1 sohc vtec d15b into rt4wd question.

SO I pick up a d15b VTi engine for my RT completly spacing off wether or not the block had casting for the int shaft. Come to find out it is not setup for int shafts period. Looks to me that Honda relocated the oil filter a little lower on this motor.

Im kinda in a spot. Was wondering if anyone else has been stupid enough to get themselves in this predickament? Im open to suggestions as this motor is pretty dam clean and I dont wanna hassle with selling it.

Only thing I can think of is if I can find an axle end from maybe a Integra or Accord that has the same splinecount as the int shaft and put it on the longass d-series axle that comes on all the other EF's, but I really dont wanna run that longass axle.

This is craptastic.

  • Put the Vtec head on the A6 block.
  • Are there even bosses where the int shaft bolts in? If so then could they not be tapped? I know it's pretty sketchy, but that's all I can think of.

Other than that your idea of a mutt axle sounds like the only viable solution.

Jaker, not gonna pull apart a perfectly good motor just for the head. If I go that route, Ill sell this motor and buy the head separatly and do a built bottomend.

B18C5, no bosses, no webbing, no nothing. Other d motors I looked at had the bosses/webbing where it would go if utilized, but this motor has nothing. Im pretty sure the oil filter is right where the int shaft would go on a A6 motor.

I have a spare int shaft at home I can dig up to compare with, but dammit I dont wanna deal with that longass axle.

evol911, thats exactly what Im trying to avoid.

Well thanks for the help those who offered imput. Ill post up if that axle abortion is an option.
  • So your D15B is a 96-00? And I wouldn't have this problem if I got an OBD1 D series...

I was told the only thing I would need to do is swap the oil pan.

    So your D15B is a 96-00?

Negative. If it were 96+ it would be OBD2.

And Im not sure what youd have to do, cause I have no idea what car your wrenching on.

There are D15B's from both OBD generations. For instance I have a OBD2 D15B "3 Stage VTEC" in my 92 hatch. The tranny I have is from an OBD1 D15B.

When I asked the question I meant that if I was doing the same swap as you which I understood to be a D15B into an AWD 4th gen Civic wagon.

At the time I knew that OBD2 D series didn't have provisions for the intermediate shaft but now I know that no 1.5 liters had it, including the OBD1's.

I didnt think that the jdm cars went to OBD2 in 96 like we had too, but all I have is second hand info, so I could definatly be wrong.

I just told my engine guy I wanted the OBD1 setup so I got the right dist for when I convert the car over to OBD1 during the swap.

After holding up the d16a int shaft I found out there is one hole allready tapped out and ready to go, but Im going to have to build a mounting plate for the other two holes. I think I was wrong about the oil filter being lower too. Looks like th int shaft was made to go right around it. Pretty sure this will go ok as far as install goes.

Im thinking all the motors I looked at previously were all non OBD blocks. 1.5 and 1.6 OBD0 blocks are good to go for the int shaft, I think you just need to drill and tap the 1.5's. Ill look into it a little closer when I get to my buddies shop. He has a few of those old boat anchors laying around out in back of the shop.

I don't know if they did or not. I'm just in the habit of referring to the 96-00 (Y engines ie D16Y8, D16Y5, and their JDM D15B counterparts as well) as OBD2. If I say "96-00" that causes problems because those years varied in different countries. I know in Japan the Z6 started in 91.

I'll be looking forward to what you find out.
